Want to replace the u-joints on the front shaft to greasable fitting u-joints. I purchased them on Rover Connection. The transmission shop wants a centering kit. Where can I get one other than a dealer? Has anybody tried the Rover Connection u-joints and found a centering kit that works with these u-joints.

Thanks-
Zonk

Bill at GBR sold me SPICER brand UJs for a bit more than NAPA, some $39 each, and $10 each for installation-$100 total

...is what NAPA sells the same product or different mfr?

Said spicer was best. I know it was more and I probably could have done it myself. For less.

If you have a autozone around go there and buy the neapco joints, made in the usa and they are $15 a piece. Napa for the centering kit like pt said.

I bought Neapco, joints and perhaps a Precision center kit (can't recall off the top of my head) from CarQuest. Over all, I had about $100 in parts. Don't bother to tell them what vehicle they are for cause it won't help, just give them the part #'s.

Oh, it might be a good idea to buy an extra joint just incase you bugger up the needle bearings in one. Its easy to do.

I think the spicers are well worth the extra cash, cheaper is almost never better;)

You folks are missing it. According to Spicer the 5-4x U-joint (the one for DII front propshaft) is not made by Spicer. They buy them from other companies. As I said in another thread, this probably explains why some people have seen them with zerks in the end caps (probably made by Neapco for that batch) and others with the zerk fitting in the valley (made by who knows who for that batch).

Spicer does make their other u-joints. Which isn't to say they make all of their other u-joints, the 5-4x is the only one I asked them about.

Neapco u-joints sold under the PDQ label are mostly not made by Neapco, they are bought from other companies (like the way Spicer gets their 5-4x joints). However, the PDQ 1-0005 is made by Neapco because it's small volumn and they don't farm them out.
Neapco boxed u-joints are made by Neapco.

As with many things you can't make blanket statements about who makes what. You have to speak of the specific item, not the entire line.
This is what I did when I called Spicer and Neapco, I asked about specific u-joints, the 5-4x and the 1-0005.
I can't think of any reason Spicer would tell me they don't make the 5-4x if they really do.

My wife currently works for Affinia and I did contract work for them last summer.
Oh, yeah..I know. I wasn't addressing my post to you really. I'm curious though, through your contacts do you have information contrary to what Spicer told me?

I'm gonna find out. The entire Fort Wayne office is coming to our housewarming party.

I do know that the wife is being encouraged to learn Mandarin. We've gotten really lucky with Affinia and SWMBO has been told she is on the fast track to management-IF she learns Mandarin. I'm looking forward to a trip to China with her.

Am I reading this right; you got your front driveshaft rebuilt for $100?

If so, thats a heck of a deal. I had that much in parts to do it myself. It was a PITA too. For $100 or even a bit more I wouldn't touch another front driveshaft.
