So who is excited about this?

I have been on Verizon for years. They are expensive and the data speeds can be anoying, especially on my aging blackberry.

But there is no way I would ever go to AT&T since I am a travel for my sales job (before i got the boot)

Anyway, I am up for a new phone soon. I will probably end up with the droid, but I am definitely going to consider the iPhone.

My wife is up for a new phone at the end of feb, so the timing could not be better for her. Give a couple of weeks to see if there are any bugs

Anyone else?

The thing I fear about Verizon and the iPhone, though, is the Verizon network. I expect to see a lot of folks changing over from AT&T to Verizon due to AT&T's shitty service. But I'm not sure Verizon's network is up to the task of handling the additional new data customers.

I also wonder what Verizon will be charging for the iPhone. $600.00+-? It's hardly worth it. In fact, its not worth it at all. The Droid is a better phone all the way around. Period. The only thing the iPhone has going for it, IMO, is its size.

I'm due for a new phone as my Verizon BlackBerry has seen its better days. But I'd never pay several hundred bucks for an iPhone.

Not as many people will be switching as you think. Most AT&T customers on are family plans and work plans. Not nearly as easy to switch over from those plans. But I am sure there will still be a moderate exodus from AT&T.

The iPhone won't be going for $600 that's for sure. I think I paid $200 for my Droid and that's when the Incredible had just come out.

is verizion offering unlimited data packages? If so Dan is right and it will probably choke their network, if not whats the point? I have an Iphone 3gs and wouldn't see the point if I couldn't download whatever I wanted.

I think verizon will introduce a capped data usage plan. Those who are on an unlimited plan now wont be able to just merge their account to a new device. The new device will create a new contract, thus eliminating your old unlimited plan. The writing is all over the wall on this.

The droid x is great, however it's size is a little large.

It'll probably be subsidized just like the ATT iPhones. I also predict an oncoming network slowdown because of this, but a sudden network speed-boost on ATT, which I'm quite happy about! I'm not as dissatisfied with ATT as a lot of folks are - it's actually been pretty good for me.

As for the iPhone vs other phones, iPhone still has many advantages - great camera, small size, excellent processor and GPU, incredible display (nothing out there comes close IMHO), syncs with iTunes and many other devices... Also tons and tons of great software and games.

Other phones come close in terms of features, and at that point it kinda comes down to personal preference. The Android interface seems lackluster and clunky to me - not nearly as clean and polished as iOS, and the handsets themselves don't have anywhere near the kind of industrial design that has made Apple so wildly successful. Sure, the iPhone 4 has its flaws, but I love mine and wouldn't trade it for a single other phone on the market.

I'll agree with Knewsom on this... I have only had issues with AT&T when I've traveled to San Francisco. Over here on the Eastern Shore and the DC Metro area, coverage has been excellent.

I've never had an AT&T phone/service, but from what I hear their service is very limited when you get away from the City. I know here where I live, AT&T still uses a 900mhz tower and the service absoultly sucks -- and this is right on the I-81 corridor. Once you venture out into the "country", AT&T service is all but gone. I just can't imagine that AT&T would have a bigger, better, network than Verizon. I can't stand it when I don't have cell serivce when I need it.

I like my iPhone 3 just fine.
I upgraded from a 7-year old motorola handset last year.
Work & home email are both on it.
Calendars, apps.

The network isn't all that, but I don't think any of them are very good.
OK, to be closer to fair, I live in the mountains.

Last time we were at the Denver football playground, (right next to downtown Denver) we had no signal whatsoever inside the stadium.
Looking around the venue, all you see are Verizon signs everywhere.
Remarkable, how AT&T couldn't get a signal in there.

ive got the 3gs on ATT now. Dan's right, outside a city=no service with ATT for me. Getting married in May and she's on Verizon. I'll switch when we get married, and at that point will make my decision on the iphone 4 or a droid.

My roommate has a Droid X. It pales in comparison to my iphone4. Not nearly as user friendly. Slower. The touch screen feedback sucks. It's slow. The same can be said for all Droids actually.

The intro of the iPhone will murder verizons network, which is already slow and unreliable. Sure it's much larger and has better coverage. But sucks for smartphones. The addition of the iPhone to the line up is going to make it worse.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not an AT&T lover. But Verizon is no better, especially not for smartphones. Now everyone is pimping their "4G" networks, which aren't even classified as 4G. Verizons 4G is capable of download speeds about half what they need to be to be considered 4G.

Bought the wife the Droid X...much better than iPhone.

And YES - the Verizon CDMA network will not be up to this. They are offering unlimited data plans. Oh well!!

AT&T sucks monkey balls around half of San Diego, let alone going outside of I-5 corridor. I am so f'n sick of it that I am about to tell my AT&T-enamored friends that I will not be taking their cell phone calls - every f'n time it turns into a "can you hear me?" clusterfuck. I am not exagerating here.

My wife was on my ass to get my daughter an iPhone so she could use it in Europe. Guess what - Droid 2 Global works just fine, at about 1/3 of a price of AT&T combined overseas voice and data plan. Fuck AT&T, it has to go down in infamy - even my landline service sucks.

The fact that iPhone supports iTunes is, of course, important for Apple suckers like Newsom. But I only tolerate iTunes for about an hour when I need to add stuff to my little iPod (no, I did not buy it). Then off it goes via uninstall.

I've had the iPhone 3g and 3gs...switched over to Sprint and an EVO a few months ago and couldn't be happier.

...plan is cheaper and the phone does not lack any features that the iPhone had...I like the EVO better due to the better camera, xenon flash, much bigger screen size, and not being limited to using itunes...I also like the android operating system better with the Sense overlay that the EVO has...I'm not a huge fan of the barebone android OS, but with Sense it's just as good, if not better, than that of the iPhone...

...too much hoopla over the iPhone...I've had it and it's good, but not that good anymore...it was leaps and bounds better than anything on the market a couple+ years ago, but other phone manufacturers have caught up now...Apple needs to come out with something quite a bit better to keep their lead...the iPhone 4 was not it...

New iPhone will be out in June anyway.... Why not wait to see how the Verizon version vies versus AT&T, then make your final evaluation once the new phone comes out?
