Today I went to back my 2001 Disco 2 out of my driveway (which is on a steep little hill) and I felt a weird vibration (near the rear part of my truck). I also had to apply a little more gas that usuall to back the truck out. This only happened when I went in reverse. I have not noticed anything when driving at 10 miles per hour or more. Any ideas what this could be? I just checked the codes and got p0741 and p0734.

0734 is classic wrong ration Maf issue but the 0741 is a clutch issue in the lock up of the torque converter

the vibration sounds like a dragging clutch

I think you have two seperate issues

Here is my current situation. I just took my Disco 2 to get looked at by a Rover shop I use and I was told that my transmission was shot and that I would need a new one. I then took my transmission to Aamco and they told me the same thing. I received three different prices to do the required repairs. The prices are as follows:
1. Rover shop gave me a price of $5000 for a new transmission with labor.

2. Aamco gave me a price of about $3000 to $4000 (cost will depend on damage after transmission is taken a part) to rebuild my transmission with better than factory parts. This includes labor and a basic warranty.

3. The guy who builds rebuilds the transmissions at the Ammco told me that he could rebuild my transmission with better than factory parts (he has rebuild 6 Disco 2 transmissions) for no more than $3000. (this includes labor.)

Should I do these repairs to a rover that has 170,000 miles (body and inside are great) with an engine that runs great but leaks coolant and oil. (I love my rover but I need some advice from other people.) Which choice should I do if you think I should get my transmission fixed?

Fix it yourself- that way you get a brand new transmission for less than a rebuilt one, and you get to know the underside of your truck.

I would say option 3 is a bit pricey for a non-licensed repair and Aamco is still on the expensive side for a non remanufactured unit. Just my $0.02

I think the $3000 and above for the Aamco is if I need to have a new transmission. If they can rebuild the price will be lower. They could not give me a exact price until the transmission is taken apart.

It's probably for their rebuild. Just make sure they are not misleading you in any way. Ask them if the high figure($4K) includes all possible "hard parts" including the pump. Also ask if that figure includes the torque converter. You don't want any surprises after you've given authorization for the repairs.

But... Considering how great the ZF transmissions really are in these trucks my first choice if I were in your shoes would be to purchase a good used unit from a member on here as mentioned. Best of luck.

You aren't getting a new transmission from Aamco for $3000. It will cost about $3500 for them to remove yours, rebuild it, add reman torque convertor and re-install. Been there, done that. They have rebuilt mine a second time 12 days before the one year warranty was up and it still leaks transmission fluid on occasion. Weird thing was the rebuilt transmission did not fix my problems.

My vote is talk with Will Tillery.

Also get some MAF cleaner and get rid of the K&N and I bet some of your other problems go away.

BTW I did the trans somewhere around 200K.
