I'm working on cleaning up the dash right now and prepping for paint. I drilled out the rivets on the vin plate and brought it in for a good cleaning. Overspray for years of use as a military truck had taken it's toll. I've never put my effort into researching how to read these plates and as a result I'm a little confused.

Is the year of manufacture listed on the plate found on the dash?

In the "vehicle no." section of my plate it says: 61 ER 88

Surely the 61 is not the year?????

I believe that is the contract number of the MOD when the truck was commissioned.

My 109 had some weird numbers all over it. Typically, the VIN (or chassis number as it were) is more letters than that, nine, maybe?

Nine,... maybe. There's a truck at the shop(been here for the better part of 10 years), it only has 5 letters for the vin. It's a late 50's vintage.

Ahhh MOD contract number would make more sense.

Above the 61 ER 88 was the regular 244XXXX chassis number. Now I can sleep at night without worrying about the "61". :D

Plate cleaned up rather nicely with some brillo and some gentle scrubba-dub action.

Now what I need is for a day when available time, dry weather, and motivation are all in perfect alignment to finish the dash.

I wonder if Land Rover still has a traceability dept that tracks the history of your vin for you?

Since it's an 'import' they probably do. If not, check with NHTSA, they track everything that isn't born in the USA.
