probably not

more than likley they are set up for 24vdc...and not distributorless like most disco's...
plus you would still have plenty of other areas to address after the ignition..(ecu's breathers...intake and so on)...probably the reason LR used diesel discos on the camel trophy

Weren't there some domestic cars that had a rubber dizzy cover that would fit on a Disco? I thought I remembered someone posting about that- and I know I've seen rubber covers on some kinda car... either a mopar or ford with the dizzy up front.

They are available from paddocks, or was it craddocks? Spendy. I "think" they would be ok on 14CUX trucks.

Water Proof Ignition

A company advertised rubber boots for distributors and coils in LRM 2 months ago ( I don't have the issue handy at thew moment). The price did not seem unreasonable given that there virtualy nothing commercially avasilable for waterproffing a Disco 3.9.
I have embarked on a venture to try and find ways to water proof a Disco engine (mine is a 95, 3.9).
I have no intention of not off roading or wading. The British writers, with greater availablilty od deisel engines, focus only on deisel wading and provide abosolutely no help/advice for gas, petrol, engines. A little frustrating.
Right now all I have for waterproofing is the snorkel rubber boots for the distributor and coil. I need to figure out how to handle the fan and spark plugs. Die electric grease has been suggested as well as Halomar.

Brian,

I have the same problem with my 92 RRC. The main problem is the vent holes on the underside of the distributor. You cannot seal the because the unit needs to breath. Some guys from Down Under pressurize the cap using thier ARB air locker compressors. Dielectric grease works great on the leads and around the base of the cap. Some Ford Mustangs and Lincolns used the rubber boot to cover the leads and some people have suggested fashioning some type of water deflector for the underside of the dizzy.

As for the air intake, snorkel is the way to go. I finally realized this on Saturday when I got my MAF wet.

5.0 / 5.8 V8 Ford trucks and cars of the late 80's early 90's had a factory boot on the cap.

I disagree that the vent holes are the culprit. If one were going that deep, other things would begin to be problematic. Also, I question if immersion would disrupt the action of the reluctor/pickup coil assembly. Immersing crankshaft position sensors doesn't cause GEMS trucks to quit-if it did, even more of them would die during rainstorms :D

In my case (unfortunately, the 'net is awash of pictures of me being winched out of otherwise easily surmountable obstacles) the issue was either with water spray fouling the distributor and perhaps also the coil.

If I had the pics on this computer, I'd share them ;) . Last trip out, I used a windshield washer bottle with two slits cut in it to cover the distributor and a one-litre water bottle to cover the coil. Made it through some very wet obstacles with nary a hitch.

I'm still searching for a five-gallon pail of liquid latex to seal my cap/wire setups.

I am not sure of the exact cause of this problem. I have heard of people sealing thier caps to the distributor base with silicone and still getting water inside. This leads me to believe the water may come in through the bottom. I doubt the coil would be affected by water being splashed on it.

If anyone knows the answers, I am listening.

I had done the RTV silicone to the wires to no avail. Same as the cap to distributor. When I've been plagued by the problem, the coil is just as wet as the distributor.

When I know I'll be in deep water I cover the grill with a piece of plastic, it has two suction cups that stick on the hood (I know it looks kind of gay). I also use the distributor cap boot off a 92 5.0 Mustang. I've had good luck with it.

Wonder if the boat stores have something- The guys running those open-rear speedboats with V8's must have some kind of waterproofing on the ignition. I know there are some waterproof coils for those too... The boat i used to have had a 454 with a rubber case over the distributor but it looked a LOT like the Mustang dizzy cover.
