Anyone use anything like this? I was thinking of welding them right below the spot where the bolt on jate ring would go. These are $11.50 per and jate rings go $40.00 + per. I just can?t pay the difference if these are just as good as the bolt on jate rings

D-Ring, Weld on D Ring 3" x 3" ID

5/8" Ring Diameter **3" x 3" I.D. with Weld-On Mounting Bracket **Capacity: 6,000 Working Load Limit (WLL); 19,000 Minimum Breaking Strength (MBS)

The material that Land Rover frames are made of isn't all that thick. I wouldn't rely on the strength of something welded on in such a fashion.

Recovery is one area, where you really do not wish to scimp. Get the jates or something better. Those little things you show are likely worse than the silly tie down anchors already under there.

if you built a stout bumper and weld those on they are normally fine. but this is me using about a lot lighter vehicle as a reference, a stripped down truggy.
Just built a bumper, weld on some 1" plate that has been shaped like a semi-circle with a hole in the center, and buy some 6-7 ton clevises from a big-rig ship. You can get the clevises for ~$8 each...

Those things are 5/8" in diameter. Hardly a "little" thing. That ring and the bracket have to weight close to 1 lb.

I'll just order the jates. Ya'll are right I don't want to scrimp; I just thought they might be OK. That's why I asked. ;)

Thanks guys,
Michael

Why don't you buy a receiver shackle and be done with it?

I did weld on rings on my bumper. but it's much thicker than stock stuff. the ones I bought are rated at 9k pounds each. I don't know how that compares to the bolt on ones but it's been strong enough for me. ;)

I have those little things welded to my frame and have used them extensively for over a year. Good welds and placement and you will be fine.

All rovertym bumpers come with rings welded on. As long as the welds are good, and the metal is thick enough, they work fine. I wouldn't trust you to weld them on and hold, either. :D

What about the comment on the frame weld. I though Discos had killer thick frames. Shoot it looks thicker than my F350 frame.

bri,
if i'm not mistaken, the frame is comprised of 14 gauge metal, which is pretty thin.
it's the boxed construction that makes it better than your Ford

Trusting your life with it and putting someone elses life on the line with it are two different things now arent they ? I have used them but really dont like putting anyone else life on them. YOu jsut cant predict how people will treat them. As far as welding them to the frame ? Next topic.........

Koby I don't know about welding to the frame because of thickness but i don't see the welds I have breaking before the bolts that hold on the bumper. the key to a good weld is the welder. needless to say I had a pro do mine. I'm sure this will cause controversey and someone will tell me my stuff is crap but I dont care. I also don't know many people who have bumper brackets made of 3/8 armor plate that will stop .50 cal bmg. And yes I shot a sample of the metal with a .50 bmg and it does stop it.
