Which truck are looking at? The trucks looks good, but if you are buying a 1983, you REALLY want to go over it, check everything, a lot of problems can be hidden with a coat of waxoyl

This.

I have a 110 and an 88 in for complete builds that were bought thinking they were in great shape.

Once we got past the paint, wax and undercoating, the frames were Swiss cheese. As were the bulkheads and seatboxes.

x2. Most people only want to buy something with shiny paint, R380, and a 300tdi. Regardless of how solid a frame and bulkhead, the apparent condition is judged based on the aforementioned items and the actual quality is often overlooked. It is easier to change an engine with one of these than it is to change a frame. I haven't done a frame yet, and don't ever want to.

Has anyone ever dealt with West Ham Imports in Birmingham?
To me, they seem sketchy based on the black 110 listed as a 1985 clearly with a Y registration plate which corresponds to a 2001. I personally think $15 grand for that brown truck is a lot. I bought some wheels and tires off you years ago and vaguely remember your truck you had just sold. I'm confident you have an idea how to inspect one of these but I would not recommend a site unseen purchase. Don't be afraid to walk away if you inspect it and it's crap. Just walk away. I'd definitely beat around with a hammer and some sort of punch.

As an owner of a 110 in super great condition, if I am selling it and you want to poke my frame..

I will let you do as I know I have nothing to hide, although your wire transfer will be in my account before you hammer my frame with a punch.

Same applies to the bulkhead and any other part that you could mark on your testings

As I said, have nothing to hide but I do not want a Self Appointed Defender Expert make holes or mark my truck and walk away because he wanted to lowball and get the FU response

Point being it shouldn't go through the frame or cause any damage. You don't even have to hardly tap to tell. I'm not suggesting he hammer as hard as he can but a light tap would go through a Swiss cheese frame. If it's covered in waxoyl like mongo said lots can be covered.

I am with you, I know what to do, You know, Frank knows, but imagine the potential screw up caused by a SADE going at it and thinking the bulkhead should be tested with a punch

That was my point

A few taps, and I'm mean tap's, not hammer blows, can speak volumes

Mike is right, most are looking for 300 tdi's and r380's, not even thinking that the frame is a piece of swiss cheese and the bulkhead is even more suspect

I wasn't going to saying anything about the blalant vin swapped Black one and 15k is steep for a V8

I use a 2 oz plumb machinist's hammer.

Light taps are plenty to shake the loose rust free on the inside of the frame.

An inspection camera allows one to look inside the frame without any indication one has been there.

One's knuckles, good light and a close eye are enough to expose bulkhead problems.

If I had the patience to resize the photos, I'd share some pics of trucks that looked great from 10 feet but once underneath, it was clear the rust hadn't all been removed when new sheetmetal was screwed over the rusty bits.

I just quoted 40 hours at $100/hr to remove the body of a truck from its frame, repair the bulkhead, replace the seatbox and put it all back together. Parts extra! We start the job week after next-and after I get the 50% deposit. It'll be better than the Defender frame I had to patch as the owner wouldn't spring for a frame, much less a bulkhead.

I was looking at the brown one. I want the 3.5 and a decent frame....no real need to a TDI... Eventually it'll get swapped out for a SBC drivetrain, and I can patch small stuff on the frame, but would rather avoid replacing the frame right now. I just finished my crawler only to find out baby #3 is coming, so a 4 seater is tough to justify, but since prices are coming down on 80s 110s, it could be feasible to obtain one now and build it a bit over time since it won't be wheeled hard for a quite a while.

There'a a blue 1985 110 about an hour away I am headed to look at next week that has frame and bulkhead issues. Since I haven't seen how extensive the rust issues can get on 110s, it should be an eye opener. oF the 3 rovers I have owned, none were rust buckets, just normal electrical gremlins.
