Last night I had an Efeste "Jolie Bouche" Columbia Valley Syrah. It was wonderful: inky dark purple, complex and mysterious with a bit of earthyness.

Right now I'm having some Top Pot Doughnuts house blend French press coffee.

Chris - I bought the same bottle of Chartreuse (1 liter) at Chartres; tried a little - it will last one hell of a long time.

In a sharp contrast, that bottle of Aberlour (still unopened) has little chance to see tomorrow.

Chartreuse is an interesting liqueur. The green variety is more alcoholic and has a wider selection of herbs than the yellow variety. Sip a little in a glass, after dinner, or try a Last Word: equal parts green chartreuse, maraschino liqueur, gin and fresh lime juice. Shaken with ice and served straight up. Magic happens with that blend, and it's my favorite.

My weekend nights have been pretty lame lately since my wife got pregnant. We used to go out every Saturday to a nice restaurant where a bartender friend works. He mixes really good drinks, very creative stuff. Since I've been stuck at home, I've been spending some time coming up with different drinks of my own.

I've been on a huge mezcal kick lately. Some may remember drinking mezcal at spring break parties from their college years in the 80's and early 90's. Mezcal is coming back and much like tequila, there now are lots of top-shelf options. Mezcal, if you've never tried it, is a cousin of tequila made from the agave plant that's smoked before it's pressed and refined.

I bought a bottle of Sombra mezcal today. It's quite decent and very enjoyable sipped, straight up.

I enjoy the smokiness of mezcal in drinks and tonight I came up with this one. It's basically a margarita but substituting the Sombra for tequila. I made up a simple syrup of serrano peppers and use that to spice things up. The result is smoky, spicy goodness.

The Don Eladio:

2 parts top-shelf Mezcal
1 part Cointreau
1 part fresh lime juice
1 part serrano simple syrup
kosher salt rim
lime to garnish

Stir ingredients together and pour over ice.

Saw that place on a TV show the other day, can't remember which one. Place looked amazing. Seemed like a great atmosphere and the donuts looked incredible. Thought it was funny how they came up with the name.

The place is great: wonderful doughnuts, damn good coffee, and baristas clad in black and tattoos.
