crawl under the truck and make sure of the color of the connector. If you have the black plug, it's gonna cost a bit. Will has them for a little over $100 bucks a piece and you have four to replace. AB has them on sale for about the same price, but I think that sale ends today. I believe that there is a universal that can be spliced in for $75 from amazon, but I have not done it, I have only read about it on here. Let me know if you find a better solution, I am looking too.

If you don't mind splicing in sensors you can universal ones on Ebay for like $30 a piece. Since disconnecting the plug is a pain not a bad idea.

john,
do those work on the black plugs (pre AELs)?
thanks,

I just noticed these on Ebay a few weeks ago. I'm all about cheap universal parts so I'm looking into this. As far as I can gather advanced evap or w/out advanced evap are still just 4 wire OBD2 sensors. I think thats about it. What you need to keep in mind is that the 96-99 D1 is a 12mm thread size. The later D2 has the more available 18mm thread size. I've posted a question to the seller on ebay to verify the thread size.

His item number is 180460157813. $19.85 each. If I get a verified thread size I'll post it up.

Just replace the one that is bad. I replaced one a few years back, and the others are still going strong with my truck having 159k on it.

After much research I have found a replacement for under $60. I just need to confirm everything, but I will say 12mm thread yes universal NO.

Disco I models from VIN # VA350102 With AEL System (mid '97-'99) use four AMR6244 sensors. These are manufactured by NGK and are labeled with their brand NTK with p/n 25044. You can buy this plug 'n play item from http://www.clubplug.net/retail_sensors_ngk.html for $72.85. I've heard various stories about whether or not off-brand "will fits" work but this is the same item that Land Rover installed. I also learned from an NGK Tech that the sensors and wire lengths are the same between the AEL (25044) and non AEL (25017) versions with the only difference being the plug. So if you found a non AEL version cheaper somewhere else, know that you could cut and re-splice with the old plug.

The seller contacted me and and they are 18mm thread holes. So for sure won't fit the DI. Looks like a search and Walker makes universal but $60 seems a little spendy.

So, if the pre-AEL (black plug) is the same bung size as the Advanced Evaps (gray plug), can you cut and splice in a gray to the black? Gray ones seem to be easier to find cheaply...

Makes sense to me.
+ & - for the pre-heater
wire for the 02 sensor
wire for the pre-heater check

Probably need to consult a wire schematic to pick the right wires. On most 4 wire sensors you can with a 12volt tester pick the heater wire out along with the ground since they are usually the same color wire. Then you have to figure out which one is the 02 sensor wire.

All four wire OBD2 function the same. I don't drive a D1 but I'd buy one and try it before I'd buy all 4 of them.

$110 is the atlantic british price for a ael sensor. I thought he mention pre-ael black plugs. any way here a list some 02 categories then inside each of those are even more types and then even more thread sizes, etc. Yes a universal COULD work if the right one is found and the wires are perfectly spliced and then weather proofed. or for a little more money you can have peice of mind.
  • Single wire unheated standard zirconia sensors.
  • Two wire unheated standard zirconia sensors.
  • Three wire heated standard zirconia sensors.
  • Three wire heated titania sensors.
  • Four wire heated standard zirconia thimble type isolated ground sensors. Within this sensor group there are multiple heater types.
  • Four wire heated standard zirconia thimble type case ground sensors. Within this sensor group there are multiple heater types.
  • Four wire heated standard zirconia planar type isolated ground sensors. Within this sensor group there are multiple heater types.
  • Four wire heated zirconia thimble type air fuel ratio sensors.
  • Four wire heated zirconia planar type air fuel ratio sensors.
  • UEGO five wire wide air fuel ratio sensors.

no694terry,
Thanks for that. I have been hi-jacking this thread in order to try to save some dough if possible. I have no fear of splices, that part is very, very easy. The question I have in my head right now isn't even about universals, but about cutting off the gray connectors on LR (or equivalent) plugs and splicing onto the black connectors. I know the threads will match up. By most accounts, it is so hard to reach the connectors for the front plugs, many people would just as soon cut and splice.
Any thoughts? Any idea about differnces on those plugs? I will of course spend the money for the right plugs if I HAVE to, but spending $450 on O2 sensors is a tough pill to swallow when I bought the truck for $1350.

I've used universals many times with no problems. You should try to keep the wires the same length, use a good wire crimper tool and if your really worried about water use some liquid wire glue. I think anyone who can install a radio could do this.

I have an IMC account and $110 seems about what a good low price would be for aftermarket D1 02's(direct fit Walkers). They don't carry the universal Walkers, but the Walker website shows them.
