Overheat?

I posted a similar post about this a little while back and since then I have changed the transmission filter which was in horrible shape. Hoping that would fix my problem. It seems to have helped but after a extended period the red light on the dashboard will still come on.

I don't really want answers like 'Take it to a transmission shop' or things like that. I want advice on what to check and look for that might be causing my problem.

Thanks-

get a temp guage and scan the tranny pan when the light is on. if its under 250f your tranny temp sensor is probably f-ked (it isnt unheard of on discos, they apparently corrode and go intermittantly whacky) showing overheating issues that dont exist.

other than that, you could have a cooler line problem or a clogged core in the radiator. but lets see what the actual temps are first. get a point and shoot temp guage at your favorite auto parts store and let us know.

i believe you can test the sensor kind of like you test a t-stat but someone else will have to chime in here.

d1 or d2?

any shifting problems related to the red light?

I had the same problem, after a long drive on the highway and then sitting at a stoplight the warning light would come on. It turned out to be the warning light sending unit that was bad, and the part was only like $20. Have you tried that ? I have to say that I was relieved that my tranny hadn't really overheated.
Good Luck.

edit:Ya! What Barefoot said. I just read his response. More coffee.........

Well myself and a buddy of mine drove around tonight until the light came on. Luckily it did so near his house so we got out and took his DMM to the tranny pan and got a reading of 55*C which translates into 131*F. Obviously the outside of the tranny pan isn't going to be as hot as the fluid and internals, but the amount of numbers you would have to add on top of that to get a degree that sounds close to overheating is highly unbelievable.

Also on top of that the light came on and briefly went off before coming back on yet again before we took a reading. Then on top of even that, the Disco was only sitting for a good 5-10 minutes tops when we were reading. When I got back into the truck to drive home the light was already off and I drove another 15 miles back home at 60mph most of the way and the light did'nt once come back on.

I'm fairly convinced this is a sensor problem, and one hundred percent convinced thats what will be changed before anything else happens if need be.
