While recovering from jet lag the day after I moved to South Africa I turned on the TV. What should come on but Sesame Street with Elmo speaking Zulu. It flipped my wig for a minute but then looked totally normal. With those puppets they could be speaking any language.

The Gay rights movement is a part of history and should be covered, just like the civil rights movement is a part of history and is covered. Just because you're anti-gay doesn't mean we should pretend history didn't happen.

...and who gives a fuck if Bert and Ernie (who have lived together in NY for AGES) get married?

Not only should Bert and Ernie be married, they should be black.

Oh sure, you're right, lets not focus on teaching kids anymore about the letter A or counting to 10. Yes, lets push social morality issues on 2-6 year olds. Hell, meth whores probably need a platform too. Zoey can be a ragged meth head and Elmo can be her pimp. Lets push all social conflicts on our kids as soon as we can because that is more important! Sure, have gay history classes, as a college course, not in public school. I let my kids watch Ses. St for its focus on early childhood learning rather than that crap on cartoon network.

I know, The Count will say something like "1, 1 domestic partner..ah ah ah, 2, 2 testicles..ah ah ah. (looses something without the transilvania accent). Oscar can be a transvestite, wouldn't that be fun boys and girls.

Who cares that adults believe the characters are gay, kids just think Ernie is funny and Bert is wierd, just leave it that way.

Sorry, had to vent. Of course there are alot of serious issues out there but this is just too silly.

Did you seriously just equate homosexuality with being a methwhore?

I don't think this is about "pushing" anything on kids - it's about what's normal. As more same-sex couples marry, it's going to become part of the landscape. Frankly, I could care less if Bert and Ernie get married. If anything, as a parent, I see how it could be useful in explaining why Aunt Jane and Aunt Sarah just tied the knot. "See? Bert and Ernie got married - men can marry men, and women can marry women too." Shit is only a big deal if you MAKE it a big deal. It has zero bearing on whether your kid is going to be gay or not. What it DOES have a bearing on is whether your kid is going to hate him/herself for it, fear you finding out the truth, and possibly feel forced to live a lie and wind up being terribly miserable and depressed for a huge chunk of their existence.

It's also not a completely new direction for Sesame Street either - they've had disabled puppets in the past, and other puppets to address other societal issues that kids may need explained to them.

As I said, the Gay Rights movement is a part of history - as is the Civil Rights movement - would you want public schools to eliminate that from the curriculum? If not, then what makes the two so different?

I know you're venting, and that Bert and Ernie really only seem gay to grown-ups because kids have zero conception of sexuality. But we explain what heterosexual marriage is to our kids, and we're going to have to explain homosexual marriage to them at some point as well.

I guess I still just don't see why any of this is such a big deal.

LOL....he didn't necessarily equate homos to meth whores, he just used them in the same sentence. It was freakin hilarious.

How many gay married couples are out there, knewsom? I'm wondering what percentage gets them up to "normal" and "become part of the landscape"....

I agree with your statement. Society gets weirder and weirder every day. Only it's not not just silly it's sad. Very sad.

Look son, he accomplished all this despite being gay! When you teach kids about historical figures why do we have to bring any of their sexuality into the discussion? Just seems a lil bit too much.
