I live in Braselton, GA now and am still learning of all the instects in this area. I can't quite figure out what type of hornet this is though. It doesn't EXACTLY match a European Hornet's description and I don't think it's a Yellow Jacket...

So what is it?

I'll look again but Yellow Jackets tend to have a deep black color and the pattern on the stinger is different. The Brownish color puts it closer to a Euro hornet but still a bit off.

Paper wasp.

My old boss got stung in the neck by one of those bastards and died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Be careful.

Poor guy didn't know he was allergic. He was just barbecuing in his backyard when he got stung. By the time he decided it was bad enough to warrant medical attention he was already in deep shit. That was a rough funeral to attend.

My wife got stung by one last week and I went into full-on DEFCON 1 readiness for shock treatment and an ambulance ride. She was downplaying it. I was like WOMAN, YOU DO NOT MESS WITH THE WASPS. Turns out her reaction was next to nothing.

My wife got progressively more alergic to bee stings - about 20 minutes after her third (that I knew about), I looked at her face, and took her to the ER.
She no longer walks barefoot on the beach, and has to carry Epipen with her. She also is mildly allergic to red wine - which contains trace amounts of bee poison (from bees ending up in the vat).

Don't mess with any of these fuckers.

Nothing like mowing the lawn and running over a ground nest. I have never run so fast in my life.

I was walking the dog and he pissed on a ground nest of bees. Next thing I know he is covered in bees. Then they start stinging me! We ran back home, by then his face was swollen and I had been stung 3-4 times.. luckily I had some benadryl at the house. The swelling went down after a few hours. But that was NOT fun!
Never been stung by a wasp.. Hopefully never will!

Yep ricey hornet spray is a very good deterrent if you are not into owning a fire arm wasp spray is a great defense since it will shoot up to 20 ft. Some dude sorry about you're old boss my mom is the same way she has to have a Epi pen at all times.

i was once stung by a red hornet on the shin while riding a trail on the bike. we got to an area with tall grass and couldn't see the ground clearly. then i felt what seemed to be a nail being hammered into my shin. i leaped off my bike and saw the thing attached to my shin... stinging and biting. The First aid kit came in real handy for treatment and the pain but that didn't keep the sting area from looking like a bad bruise days later.

If stung by bee pull stinger or it continues to sting. If younhave anaphylactic reaction consider talking to doc about having an injection onhand. Especially ifmyou are at risk for being a long ways from a hospital. Nearest to me at home is abou 30 minutes, so if something like that did happen to someone at my house 911 would be the right call. If you have on hand and can treat i think it greatly reduces chance of death... and yep, if you do have this reaction it gets worse each time you are stung and many time reactions vary with insect.

h... my wife is highly allergic so this is all very good to know.

I was just checking into replacing my expired epipen last week and on their website is a coupon for a free copay. Those things are expensive.

I recenty read that you can kill them with dish soap so I gave it a try and it worked (on a smaller nest at least). I just got rid of a nest on my garage by squeezing as much soap as I could out into the hose stream.
