I don't think you necessarily have to. There's ways to adapt the motor to the Rover drive train. Especially if he's using the factory ECU to run it.

I'm thinking about going to a 4.8 on my D1, but I have a manual so it's a lot easier.

From what I've read on the interweb, the Rovers transmissions won't like the extra power, and the 4l60 interferes with the front driveshaft.

but thats just me spitting out info I read.

Nicks adapter to the 6l80e is the best bet...I have a Marks 4WD 4l80e adapter on my buggy and it adds 6" to the overall length, but it does give you the clearance you need to use a lt230.

I'm gonna jump out on a pretty sturdy limb and say you'll never see problems by mating a 4.8 LS to any stock Disco drivetrain. At low rpm's the 4.8 and the stock 4.0 or 4.6 make similar torque. At high rpm the LS has a good deal more power, but high rpm isn't where you break stuff. Usually.

As long as you don't drive like a total ass hat a mostly stock 4.8 LS will be fine with the rover transmissions. I mean if you drive like an idiot, you can break stuff with the stock motor too.
