my '95 has over 280,000 miles on it, the heads have never come off. All electricals (except for some bulbs and an condenser fan) still work (as designed). No sunroofs, though. It's been a southern california and nevada truck its whole life (no rust), although it has spent winters in baja cali and calgary.

My 95 D1 has 190K on it, no major engine or trans work. Parts that I replaced.
Raditor, all hoses, fan clutch, trans lines, PS pump, steering box, 02 sensors, alternator, starter, pully tensioner, wheel bearings, rotors, two calipers, tie rod ends, rear 3rd member, front and rear DS's, shock and springs. Other then a slight knock, which started about 10k ago, once she warms up, she runs great.

My '98 300TDI D1 is still under 220 kkm, but the most of my domestic friends Discos are over 350. We follow our leader Manucho with over 550 kkm in his red '94 300TDI D1, without changing head gasket, off course!

I'm curious, are DI's generally considered more reliable than DII's?

Your question might be better worded "Are D1s considered less unreliable than D2s?"

My 98 D1 GCC specs 16 cux lucas. No ABS, No Airbags, no sunroof, no alarms, no leather, no eletric seats has 172k miles on it of which I put 60k on it in less than one year.

Daily driver doing 270 miles on it DAILY plus dune bashing on the weekends, Rolled two and half times off a dune landed on its side and had to be dragged down on its side. Cosmectically tired inside and out but runs like a champ

When first bought almost two years ago. All bushes under neath replaced, in the last 6 months or so. All u joints. Water pump. oil cooler lines, rocker cover gaskets. oil pan gasket. Oil pump seal ( the one that has a sping in it, Steering box reman, rear diff seal, valley gasket, plugs, main belt. Ac line leak repaired, gas recharged. Tensioner pulley replaced Tranny oil twice since I had it. brakes, shocks, HD coils, Fuel pump entire assembly including sender + fuel filter. Fuel filler and breather hose . PCV cleaned. TB heater line Bypassed, expansion tank and cap replaced, New bigger core radiator just put in. Just greased the shafts and U joints, yesterday and replaced both front UJ's AGAIN !

Work that needs to be done, Front diff whining on decelration. excessive play in the TC. One rear upper arm bush is knacked so need to be done and its clonking on articulation. Fuel injectors need to be cleaned/replaced due to hard starting problems

Any lesser car and how much abuse I put t through I think would have died on me long back. Plus older landys are pretty cheap to maintain here.

Plus recently found out source for very low milage enitre motors and trannies for only 700 USD !!! plus a few more for instalation and since I'll get peanuts if I ever sell it. SO plan to keep it forever until I can !

My 95 D1 with 190K has only let me down twice. Once it was the alternator and the othe time the fuel pump. My 01 D2 I had, let me down way too many times. It had alittle over 100K. In my case, the D1 is more reliable by far.
