I have 15" rims on the Series right now and am slowly looking to replace those in the future. What is the exact wheel size that fits a IIa ?

Assuming you keep the 15" rims (a good choice), aquire a set of 32x10.50 tires and you'll be set. They'll work like a champ and be quite cost effective.

I am under the general impression that the 34x10.50 LTBs will fit without problems. I hope to test this theory soon.

Agreed. If you want to change to 16" then you need 235/85-16 tyres and 16x6-16x7 rims.

I have 285/75-16 (basically 33"x11.0") MTRs on Discovery steel wheels with 30mm less backspacing (30mm more offset) on my ex-military IIA (one-ton chassis). I had to reduce the steering lock and now the front wheels still rub the chassis shackle bolt on full articulation. The rear just clears but occasionally can rub the front edges of the guards on full articulation.

The military/one-ton chassis has 1.5" spring/chassis lift over a stock series.

Both 16" and 15" were stock on the Series rovers. There were slight variations in width and offset depending on model. The upshot is that any OEM wheel will fit, up to and including wolf wheels. Even Series I Disco alloys will fit, if you're so inclined.

Tires are a whole other matter, and depend on which wheel you decide on and which model Series you have.

The heck you say.....

You can't fit the alloys on 'em with drum brakes, the hub won't alloy the back face of the wheel to seat up..... Least that's what I was seeing when I tried to put the Tornados off of the Disco onto the 88"....

My bad. You're right, series to disco (if it's got the right offset to allow for the calipers), not disco to series.
Do I have to eat an alloy now? :p

Thanks for the reply. Were all series trucks tubed tires? Is there any convenient way purchasing some series wheels? I've been looking for a bit, and can't seem to find any....no after-market for series rims? thanks again.

A very few American companies (like one....) made wheels to fit the LR hub. And yes, the wheels were made to run with tubes. Though my Rover came with 15" wheels from new, I swapped over to 16" rims circa 1975 - and they would leak air slowly past the rivits. It wasn't until I had 'em galvanized in '77 or so that they stopped leaking.

Wheels for coilers will fit series, but not the other way 'round. A guy had several galvanized 16" wheels at the MAR for $10, but that was *last* weekend.

Still snotting out that red Piedmont dust....

By the way, Tom, what wine goes with aluminium?

Cheers

What is it w/ you and Tom getting that backwards??? ;)

The wheels from Series will fit a coiler (well, RRC, DI, and Defenders; but *not* DII, LR3, P38, RRIII, or Freelanders/LR2..). But coiler alloys won't go on a Series (unless it has coil-sprung axles, or some other alteration.

But to confuse the issues, steel wheels from Defenders, or the spares from DI's, will fit a Series.

RN, BP, etc. etc., almost all of the Rover vendors should have 16" wheels available that will work.

Thanks Leslie for the clarification, that was the impression I was under. Got a bit confused on that for a sec. I missed MAR this year. We'll be there next year for sure. Wish I coulda scored some of those series wheels for $10. Aw weel.

Also for the record, there are companies out there that make custom wheels and with proper measurements can make wheels for whatever set you need, be it Rover or otherwise. Talked to a company this morning about some custom heavy duties, which would be helluva sweet, but they go for $197 a piece when it's all said and done. Yowza.

I'm guessing Sandy meant steel, and also that 15" Series wheels won't clear the coiler calipers. Neither will the bolts on the MOD two piece rims.

So what am I looking for Tom? 16" one piece steelies? I figured they wouldn't all fit with those calipers.....my assumption was the later model series III's was what I'd be looking for. Here's a pic of what I was going for figuring these were series wheels: http://www.discoweb.org/nadim/Articulation%20Rear%20PS%20M.jpg

Ofcourse Nadim being in Lebanon and all might have some other/better wheel options.

cheers.

I'm a little confused, do you want Series wheels for a series? or series wheels for a Disco? If for a disco I like the Wolf's.

Good point, Tom.... if looking for a Disco, I'd go w/ the Disco spare wheel (as I have on my Series, too....). I won't suggest them, given that they're extra wide for a Series, but, they do work w/ a Series... the Disco steelie is one of the strongest wheels out there, but, at 7" it's really wide and it's the heaviest of the Rover wheels. So, if you're looking for unsprung weight reductions, it's not the wise choice (my perspective on it was, they're strong, and, I'm not going to drive the Series like a sports car, so, I went with them).

FWIW....

Yeah, sorry never disclosed that....I'm looking for series wheels on disco. I'm looking to get skinnier, and thus the 7" steelie is still more than I want. Are the wolfs width at 6.5 only? I guess the main issue is going to be brake calipers on the disco. I wasn't really sure what my options were, so I wanted to ask around a bit. I can take measurements when I hear the general concensus on direct bolt up options. The custom wheel makers...the exspensive ones I mentioned will make a wheel with exact specs with considerations for calipers and etc on the back of the wheel....of course with out measurements, they won't know what they can give me either. Right now, I've been promised a 16x6 wheel in our bolt pattern. Thanks.
