Just bought a 2001 DII that needs topping up of power steering fluid. Owners manual shows a fluid that I can only find at the dealer:banghead: Texaco Cold Climate 14315. Anybody out there know of a fluid that would match?

I guess you can use any fluid, but I wouldn't. The recommended fluid is a cold-weather fluid which is actually green in color as compared to the traditional redish color of basic power steering fluid. You can actually get the cold-weather fluid at a GM dealership. Not many of their cars use it (some trucks and cadillacs I think) so you might have to work with the parts guy to find it. I don't have the part number here with me at work, sorry.

I have the GM#'s 12345866 & 12345867. Should there be a fluid at parts stores that matches?

Doubt it. I could only find it at my friendly GMC dealer. No way I'm paying for the LR bottle. And actually the GMC guy had never seen the stuff before (he had to get it from a partner dealership) and he was very appreciative for learning of the different PS fluid. Threw in an extra bottle for nothing. So I have plenty now, which clearly will be used to feed the leaky box. Not that kind of box, but nonetheless leaky...

Try Lucas Power Steering Stop leak......it really works!!!.......Different Lucas!.......drain/siphon out enough to put entire small bottle of the Lucas P/S Stop leak and 99% sure it'll fix it or drastically slow the leak!!!

.......and......

BTW :ONLY use Dexron ATF for minor top ups!, for a complete fill use the specified fluid!!!......or you'll get noisy/squawky steering!

If in doubt about anything LR - always consult Owners Manual or LR Workshop Manual!!!!!!

I tried the Lucas stuff. Doesn't work well in the MN cold. I buy fluid from VW as it is the same stuff. The correct stuff should be green.

So, another myth goes bust.
Seems that Texaco PSF14315 is not made from unobtanium anymore.
The same formula is marketed by penrite as fully ACE compliant under type penrite PSF001
http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products/power-steering-&-suspension-fluids/pas_fluid
among the specifications it complies with are MB236.3
See link
http://www.penriteoil.com.au/pis_pdfs/PAS Fluid JAN 2010.pdf

And guess who makes 236.3 as well.
Fuchs lubricants, which is a BMW and Merc OEM supplier or has been it at some time
Fuchs sells that product as Fuchs Titan PSF

Best regards from Spain

Be careful about the CHF-11s.
It's top quality fully synthetic but viscosity is very very low compared to the other one (MB 236.3 spec).
If you take a look at penrite's website the pentosin CHF-11S equivalent is listed as LDAS
http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products/power-steering-&-suspension-fluids/ldas

data sheet
http://www.penriteoil.com.au/pis_pdfs/0LDAS FLUID Oct 2011.pdf

maybe it's too thin for ACE, as some people complained about the pump going noisier.

I ahd a noisy pump due to putrid fluid, developed a leak in valve block, had to refill with cheapo ATF as was going to rebuild it anyway. With the mix the sound vanished.

As Penrite's list PSF001 as direct ACE formulated fluid, and that one as a 236.3 MB compliant, and the Fuchs is MB 236.3 compliant as well as MB341 (which is very low temp fluid as well) I would stick with Penrite and Fuchs (and are plain DII as well)

Even british parts sell plain ATF DII under STC50519
http://www.britishparts.co.uk/.sc/ms/dd/ee/875/POWER STEERING FLUID
which results being comma AQM automatic transmission fluid (plain DII)
see photos and white label

Good god. I have 160K on original pump and ace pump. Think I will just stick with Rover fluid. CHF 11s is red in color. 7.1 is green which looks like the Rover stuff:banghead:

I continued researching and that's what I found
1.- The OEM Texaco 14315 or 33270, made both from Unobtanium, is (or was) available 66% cheaper thorugh DAF truck dealers as Cold Climate PAS fluid, which complied with LR's 14315-33270. Seems it was available in 20-litre drums but... now seems only in 100-litre ones.

TEXACO DATA:

2.- Transmax Z from CAstrol, recommended by many of you. Problem is specs are different Oz-wise from Europe ones.
OZ-specs transmax Z:
http://www.castrol.com/liveassets/bp...Transmax_Z.pdf

In Spain there are 3 kinds of Transmax, (Dual, Multi vehicle and Z). I have downloaded the PDS and datas are not the same as the oz- version.
I will be phoning texaco Spain to find alternatives.

3.- Penrite's PSF001 is more expensive than the STC50519 genyouwine stuff, in Spain.

So, more news, after a lot browsing:
After having called FEBI (Ferdinand Bilstein, Germans, who have a very good oil range) and being told they don't stock that one (ahh the joys of 33270)

-I contacted TExaco baltic, where the oil is being manufactured and stocked, Got access to PDS, and guess what, it's almost the same as Texaco Texamatic 7045E (only a little bit viscosity for ambient temperatures we will never experience in continental Europe).
So there goes the PDS:

Viscosity, Brookfield

Performance standards
Allison C-4 fluid (Approval No. C4-30353901)
• General Motors GM6417M
(obsolete DEXRON®-IIIG)
• MAN Standard 339 Type F
• Voith 55.6335 (DIWA and Midimat)
• ZF TE-ML 02F, 04D, 17C
• ZF Lenksysteme TE-ML 09A, 09B.

The most important is being TE-ML 09B compliant, which is for steering racks.
Even the TExaco oil chooser states the TExamatic 7045E as direct use fluid for PAS and stability control in the D2, D3 and RRS.
Texaco

Besides, the original stuff is readily available in Latvia, but it's a little too far away.
There is another fluid which complies with all those performance level,
Wolf oil central hydraulic fluid, the Titan ZH4300
http://www.wolfoil.com/update/docume...aal/5078ne.pdf

Complies with the TE-ML09B, the Chrysler MS-5931, the GM wide temperature range (9985835) , but it's the data sheet which does not convince me, it's too thin for my liking, thinner than the texaco OEM stuff

Best regards
Robert

I had an extended warranty company tell me to use Dexron III for a DII PAS pump and they wouldn't even pay to flush the system.

That truck has gone 100K over the past (wow, it's been that long!) seven years.

I'm curious as to just how critical it is to use the exact correct fluid.

Been using Mobil1 ATF for about 80,000 miles. It works well, except that when cold I occasionally get some squeaks from the belt on right turns, but oddly parking is fine. I assume this is a viscosity issue. I was hoping the Mobil1 might keep the steering box lasting longer.

I thought I read in the workshop manual ATF was fine if no ACE.

I picked up 2 of the GM#12345867 qt bottles at the local GM dealer. $20 retail each. I told him I did not want him to hit me with the retail price, if I had wanted to pay the gold plated prices I would have gone to the Land Rover dealer. He laughed and gave me the wholesale or trade price of $15 each. So $32 and change for the 2 bottles. I could tell it had been on the shelf for awhile, and he had never heard of it.

My P/S fluid was more the color of dirty motor oil, and I had thought I had a small oil leak, but is was P/S fluid. I did the flush on the D2, by draining old fluid through the bleed screw on the top of the steering box under the rubber bleed screw nipple which fell apart when I removed it. Dry rotted, it would seem. Imagine that with all that heat. Poured in new fluid keeping the reservoir about 1/2 full and having someone move the steering wheel left & right with the engine running until new fluid running with no old color in it. This GM cold climate P/S fluid is a clearish golden amber/yellow in color. I then added some Lucas P/S conditioner/sealer to top it off from the 1/2 mark until full. The Lucas is red in color. The small leak I had stopped and all seems good after 40 miles or so of driving. :)

Last summer I had the gasket on my PS pump start to leak; I used the Lucas and swear it got worse, and fast. PS pump sounded like a drowning cat.

After rebuilding the pump, I just used the Mobil ATF. I think I've still got a small leak, but no pump noise whatsoever after 9 mo.
