Why you shouldn't buy a D2

I've had my Disco since mile numero uno, and I could swear my service history report is 93,000 pages long....half maintenance, half problems.

Needless to say, I disagree lack of maintenance is the sole culprit. Duh, no maintenance equals more problems, but its my personal experience that says otherwise. Still love my truck though :banghead:

I've loved my D2. I think they're very easy to work on as well. Yes it has it's quirks but I knew that getting into it. Unfortunately it sound like you got a mistreated truck from the beginning. I purchased mine with 63k on it and have 104k on it now and haven't had any problems. It's been a hell of a lot more reliable than the Dodge Ram I had before.

On the other hand, my buddy bought an 01 that was built well but needed a little maintainence to get it up to snuff. Well, he didn't and has had issues with it and now wants to get rid of it. You just have to the ability and will to stay on top of things before shit hits the fan

While I agree that these trucks had build quality issues. The majority of the headaches that people experience with these trucks can be prevented with normal maintenance. Which can expensive in itself.

I guess you just have to take the good with the bad.. Unfortunately sounds like the OP got one that was too far gone

How does normal maintenance prevent the head gaskets from giving up?
How does normal maintenance prevent the 3 amigos ?
How does normal maintenance keep sunroofs from leaking?

D2's are nice comfy rides with limited trail capabilities, no doubt, but if I were to do it all over again, I too would have kept my D1.

You just need to get 3 or 4 of them and develop a rotating driving schedule. This way you have a good chance of at least two being road ready at any given time. And plenty of time to make repairs to the laid-up ones.

Judging from your sig, it appears as though you have copied my scheme for ensuring that there is always a Rover around that runs.

Have YOU ever drained, flushed and refilled your cooling system? Dex-Cool is rumored to become more and more acidic as time goes by, thus destroying the composite material and eventually, the steel portion of the gaskets.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, a drain cock might be nice.

Perhaps rotating tires and replacing hubs?

Keeping sticks and twigs out of them? Keeping debris out of the drain tubes?

I tend to think they have similar, if not nearly identical capabilities as a DI and with the electronic controls, might be better.

I know my DII performs every bit as well as my stock DI did. No, it will never be as easy and inexpensive to build a truck like my SWB with a DII platform.

Good point about coolant PT. I haven't run dexcool in quite awhile and attribute that to my head gaskets lasting 104k

How are they limited?
My answer to your question is, needing reverse to negotiate turns in the woods, that makes it LIMITED, overall height makes it LIMITED.
Nice wanna be trucks, but LIMITED.

Yes , simalar, but I never once had to get under my D1 to engage the diff lock ( no need to explain why).

Not making fun of D2s, I built a real nice one, but I also built a nice D1, and if I had it to do over, I would choose a D1.
As for the coolant issue, I tend to think that what you say makes good sense, but considering that most D2's were expensive when new, and driven by people who could afford proper service, there is way too large of a number of them that need head gaskets, to blame this on coolant.

I fell in love with LR when I bought my first D2 in 2004. I didnt want to, but I traded it in for my D3 in 2010. Just found the old girl on CL yesterday, paid $1k for it. Im never letting it go this time. Parts are very available for the D2. Why wouldnt you?
