Im looking for a good winch for my samurai based buggy... based on price and reviews im leaning towards the warn m8000 and the m8000s. since it will be dual purposed as a suck down winch on the front im hesitant to use synthetic rope. The rig will weight in at around 3k pounds tops. Im worried about speed but weight and reliability are also a factor. Id like to get some real world feedback about the m8000 but if you can recomend other brands that are comparable it would be appretiated.

Thanks for the suggestions gents. I'm looking to stay in the 6 to 8 hundred price range. Seems like all of them have strengths and weakness's guess its pick your poison. As for the winch line I'm not all about the maintenance of syn line. But I don't have first hand experience.

It's only a lot of maint if you do it... In all seriousness, I have paid attention to my syn lines but wouldn't say I maintain them all that well-& they have held up well. Worthwhile tradeoff for the safety. Go with the superwinch.

I've been using an 8000 lb. Smitty Built winch for the past 10 years for my disco. I cost $300 then and has been a good one so far. I got it from the Winch Depot.

Maintenance? Synthetic is the only way to fly if you're using your winch a lot. Steel is weaker and heavier, not as safe, spools up and breaks winch bars easier, gets compromised (line gets crushed) easier, etc.

The only "maintenance" is to not treat it like complete crap and drag it along rocks and rough surfaces. People think when the line gets "fuzzy" that's it's breaking down or not rated at it's capacity any more. Not true. You don't need to spend $500 on a line - a good Dyneema 3/8" line is plenty for most of us. With that little truck of yours you won't need to go that heavy - same with the winch. No need for a 9K.
