Trucks, Jeeps, etc are common vehicles for common people. Only Land Rover owners really understand Land Rovers. Gee, I don't recall anyone doing expeditions that get world media attention in an F250 or Jeep Wrangler.

the turtle expedition has crossed the globe in every direction in a ford f series...guess you havent been around enough:D

Move to Denver or Boulder, CO, every other vehicle is a Disco or RR, with lots of Defenders and Series trucks around too. My two discos are stock, but there are lots with tasteful mods.

True.

But when you're on I-70 heading towards the Eisenhower Tunnel, you'd better get those D1's, D2's and D90's in the right hand lane, 'cause there's a line of F250 Superduty Turbo diesels pulling trailers with the cruise control on about 95MPH...Meanwhile my D2 was hunting between gears around 65MPG with the accelerator pegged:)

being pretty "red" myself and hanging out with all the people you all described, they were very shocked when I first got my Rover. They were talking about all their trucks being able to out wheel mine so I challenged them one by one to the local mud hole and hill climb. They started droppin one by one and now my truck is a legendary offroader. Now we just like joking about how they can kick my ass in a race. But again my situation is a little different than most.

Wow, this thread started out as a sleep deprived rant at 3 in the morning, I never expected it to get this big. Yeah I guess I should've posted it elsewhere but it was a hectic morning at work, and my buddy and I were arguing about how my truck doesnt suck etc... actually it was more of a Disco bashfest that I couldn't back away from. I don't really care much if they want to bash it though as I have already earned the respect and membership nomination from the islands biggest 4x4 club for following them on some of the roughest trails and being the recovery rig for a few of them. They mostly wheel frankenjeeps and old broncos and K5's so I guess Im holding my own pretty well.

Edit: wow a gold star? cool.

tell your redneck friends to go watch the "kalimantan 96' camel trophy" and then they'll see who's truck is capeable... a discovery might be a bit too sophisticated for a hillbilly though, what with mod-cons like air conditioning and such

All of the parts falling off this vehicle are of highest quality British workmanship:D

I love those stickers on Series for sure. I did hear one: Land Rover, a collection of parts going in the same direction.

I was parked next to my buddy's 96 Disco the other day and his neighbor came out of her house and over to us. "Y'all have nice jeeps, are you in a club or something?" :shoot:

Poor lady....

Mine's an SE, but Rover's rock with or without leather.

I have an S with the Pleather and I think it fits the disco's image of utility and offroad ,no frills, let's see what this thing got, hit the trail with balls out image. IAnyway, I would rather wipe off the duragrain and get on with it than fuss over real leather.

Here in CT there is this town that has a population of like 1,500 people next to mine. It is complete redneckville. Each class of theirs has like 20 kids so they got to high school at my school.

They all seriously drive 1980's Ford or Chevy pickups with huge lift kits. Some of them have like 33"+ mud tires on theirs (and do not change the gearing from what I hear when I ask- I'd like to know there mpg). Some of them are too cheap so they have a 4" lift and stock 15" wheels and stock tires- completely ridic. I almost forgot to mention how a couple of them have confederate flag decals on the rear windows and one of them had a huge confederate flag tied to the back of the truck (until the principal told the kid to take it off because it was offending the black students).

Anyways they always try to make fun of my car and think it has no capability what so ever. I've never competed with them, but I just tell them their trucks are rusting pieces of $hit (which in most cases is true). They refer to it as a "preppy SUV".

It really pisses me off, damn rednecks.

I've never had my rover called a Land Cruiser before until yesterday when my friend called it that. I gave him a long lecture on how my car was not a LC. A lot of people think its a Range Rover, which is actually is pretty convenient cause a Disco was originally what- $40k and a Rangey was $70k haha. I usually correct them though and attempt to tell them the relation between the two. I also love how people assume that Discoveries are comfortable and luxurious- to an extent they are, but if you are 5'10" like me you will find the ergonomics bizarre.

Great story, a teacher was asking me about my disco (who I would say is pretty knowledgeable about cars). He was like "What kind of engine does it have in it- v6?" and I said "No it has a V8... but it sucks because its a 4.0 so its really slow" and he said "Well you must get good mileage right- like 21mpg?" and I said "Hah! Try 14mpg"

Boy did I get off topic here.

When I started wheeling Tonka, my DII; the local yokels were surprised beyond words. Every mudhole I hit, I would hear," I can't believe you're taking that truck off-road. They're so expensive. You're crazy." I always ended up laughing to myself. My 02' brand new, cost less than a brand new F350 diesel. And when I bought it 3 years old, the resale had dropped to the same price as a 4x4 F150, quadcab. The "reds" have no clue, simply because they're too ignorant to get one. As previously posted, they are common people, so they drive the common vehicles. There is nothing wrong with having a niche vehicle. But it can be tiring always trying to explain to layman why we prefer our Rovers. Until I blew the transmission, I weekly got visits from strangers to my house, begging me to come out and pull out there stuck trucks with my "landcruiser". LOL!

I think a lot of the sneers coming from rednecks come from the snobbery displayed by a lot of the owners of our trucks. It's been my experience that of you meet a lot of those people on the trails, and you are not a complete jackass to them they will actually ask you questions about your truck and want to see what it can do. Or maybe I've just been really lucky. Just my .02

EJB90; Are you sure you live in CT? Lord has New England changed. I was born in Boston in the early 70's. Lived in NE until the early 90's. MA. CT. NH., and ME. When I left, it was still legal to run rednecks out of the colonies on a rail. And if you killed one, the local police wouldn't even question you. Are you saying, truthfully, that New England is now allowing inbred, uneducated, ignorant scum to live among them, without doing anything about it? I almost do not want to go home for vacvation's anymore.

LOL CT Rednecks
Dude what town are you in? I grew up in Bloomfield and drove my Range Rover to school in hartford every day. West Hartford is full of Rovers so no one really cared about it. My buddies used to fly rebel flags off their lifted chevy's at school, didn't go over too well. I always laugh when I see one flying on a backroad in Litchfield county. WTF? I began beating on my Rangie from the day I got it so no one really questioned its abilities. When I moved to Mass(HUGE MISTAKE!!) everyone would turn their nose up at me. Now that I'm in Alaska I really don't care what anybody thinks about it, it's just that everyone wants to debate me on it even though it is the first Rover they have ever seen and they don't know jack about it. The same guy who has the monster F350 told me that jeeps have been the same for years since they have 7 grille slats and round headlights. It's getting old so I don't even bother any more, the only time it makes a difference to me now is when I go into the auto parts store and ask for parts for a Land Rover and they come back with stuff for Land Cruisers. :hammer:

Yea tell me about it. I would love to run them out of town. They seriously need to go build their own HS and keep to themselves and embrace the redneck culture in their town. Even worse they influence some kids in my town over to the "red" side (redneckism).

They are seriously are inbred too. A lot of people from that town are related to other people, there are two sets of step siblings, and one kid looks like he's about 95 years old when infact he's 16 so I think there is some inbreeding there too.

Seriously though, you could get away with murder in that town. They have no form of police department. Occasionally a state cop will drive up and make sure everything is alright. They do have 2 (ancient) fire trucks though.... no ambulance association or EMS company though.

I forgot about this wonderful picture I have...
I was driving through there town (expecting to see some redneckism) when I saw a moving spec up the road. I continued to drive until I saw this and said to myself "Is this happening? No Fucking Way"....

Yea that is probably the most redneck town you can find. Looking at the demographics of the town it's actually quite redneck for having minimal taxes and an average income of $73,000- although not exactly much for the area it seems like it would be enough to live without being a complete redneck.

Believe me my neighboring town is nothing like that.

Yea I hear that CT people are all snoody bastards too. I also hear that New Englanders are stuffy. I've never really noticed a difference but I haven't been out west since i was like 6.

Here in CT people always use Arkansas as an example of like the most remote redneck place ever. I don't really know how to put that in context but I am sure you get the idea.
