I have been thinking about joining one in an effort to become more of a yuppie, and learn a thing or two about wine.

But seriously...

And on a date last night this girl told me she would do "wine nights" with me if I did it, so now I'm shopping!

Although I am not into wine, but I would check local stores, etc. and see when they do their wine tastings. Also see if you havce wineries around your area, pretty much all of them have tasting areas, restarurants, etc. Gives you a chance to go out socially under the pretext of wine tasting. And since you are new to the wine thing you can also sample various types and see what kind you like.

Forget about wine of the month clubs. Most of them have substandard wines. Find some wines that you like and then check with the winery to see if they have a club. I'm assuming that TX allows wine to be sent there.

Will no secret to wine. If it taste good to you than its a good wine. Don't get caught up in price and fancy clubs.

Go to the hill country find someone to drive you around and visit all the vinyards. Then go to Napa county do the same. Find another region do the same.

Don't do wine clubs, do your own legwork.

Start with a grape that isn't as popular and is harder to find like Barbera (italy) or Petite Sarah. You'll have an easier time remembering what you've had and the smaller selection is less overwhelming.

So the boxed shit isn't good enough for her?

She sounds expensive and will likely become jealous of the Rover eventually.

Veritas Chardonnay and Viognier.

Horton's Norton, Viognier, Stonecastle White, and for something different, the Petit Manseng.

Cross Keys
2007 Port. It's a young Port, but still very good. If you can find their 2007 Joy White, it's good. Their 2009 is not worth a shit.

Autumn Hill's 10th edition.

Kidding aside, I have drunk a $ 9.99 bottle of Bolla or Bella Sera and they are very good wines. so, as everyone else have said, talk to your local Spirits place ( by my place there is always Friday Night Tasting ) and they recommend some options

BJ, if you're ever down near the Johnson City/Fredericksburg north of San Antonio, give me a heads up. The wife and I go up there all the time to purchase wine direct from the vineyards and there are 25+ you can visit. It's very easy to get a B&B there for the weekend and do a 2 day wine tour. PM me if you want more info on it, but my wife and probably go through about a case every 2 months of Texas wines.
