Hi everyone. It's finally reached 30,000 miles. I need to bring it in to the LR dealer. Do you know what kind of work they'll perform, and how much they'll charge? Also, it's time to replace them brakes.

I know that bringing it to the local autorepair shop would save me tons of $, but I dont know if it's worth it.

Please give me your inputs. Thanks.

You can do the brakes yourself. It's very easy and you only need some basic tools.

Just did mine on Friday and it's worth it IMHO. I did the brakes myself, and they did the rest. The driveline seems nice and tight again with no "clonk".

Al, Mosi..

You usually replace your own brakes? Do you use the Genuine LR parts or aftermarket? Where do you usually purchase them for a decent price? How long does it take to replace your brakes?

What kind of work do they perform to tighten your driveline?

Kayla,

I used the genuine pads as I have learned in the past not to mess with aftermarket... HOWEVER, I have been hearing some excellent reports on the Ferodo pads. You can find a good write up on the replacement at Expedtion Exchange http://www.expeditionexchange.com/disco2brakes/

They grease the u-joints on the propeller shafts. I also had them thoroughly inspect the front prop shaft hookes joint which may have caused them to remove it, reinstall, re-tighten, etc...

i use the cheapest pads i could find and they've worked fine for three years. what ever advanced auto has on sale..

i don't see the fasination with all the brake pad malarky. i dont think the brake pads are the isssue. just throw out the abs and you'll be able to stop in a reasonable distance.

you can change them yourself for like $50 or the dealer will be $ 250- 500

I used the Ferodo. I've been told they're the OEM and they look pretty much the same as the genuine stuff. They went on very quick and this was the first time I did my own brakes in over 10 years.

Rob, generally speaking when people complain about the pads it's with the amount of brake dust and squeal. In non-rover applications I have seen differences between one brand and another in stopping distance and I've also seen ABS stop a vehicle MUCH sooner than a skilled driver could without ABS. Especially when you consider some of the more advanced ABS systems when braking hard into a turn. ABS isn't what it used to be.

Off road and rover applications may differ. I've driven off road with and without ABS and I really don't have an opinion for or against it off pavement. But there is no way you can adjust braking to individual wheels in a turn without ABS.

just my 2 cents.

you have to learn how to drive without the abs. you lock the brakes, turn the wheel, let off the brake and then slam them again.. i dont want to get into it, but i am superiour to ABS.

i've never had any squeel from generic pads, but i alway put silicon on the back to prevent.

brake dust , you might have a point, i never really payed attention to that.
