My dad bought a new V6 4x4 Tacoma base model for a fleet truck. It looks good like all Tacomas have and he likes it a lot. I think it feels sluggish even compared to the old 4.0 trucks. It is also like looking out of a bunker, similar to old XJ Cherokees. Toyota kept the 4.0 in the 4Runner for a while longer than the Tacoma. Maybe someone over there realized heavy vehicles need torque? Either way it's still a Toyota and will likely go the distance. No car brand is infallible though, and I wonder how building more technologically advanced engines will affect their signature reliability.
My dad had a few Nissan 4x4s as fleet trucks for his Shell stations in the 80s, so I was surprised when we went with a Toyota. I have not driven one of the new Frontiers, but I see a red offroad-y looking one in my office garage. Nissan hit it out of the park looks-wise. If they still have the VQ-derived 4.0, the Frontier would be just below the Colorado in my little truck tier list.
