Thanks for your thougts and ideas.
I can't see any indication that the distributor has been forcefully rotated in the front cover.
I guess the state of the washer proves that the chain was not broken when the washer found it's way down to the crank gear?
Othervise the broken gear and chain could...
I'm also confused about why the shaft broke??
The oil inside the camshaft channel and spacer leading oil to the distributor drive gear smelt very bad which made me wonder if oil flow to the distributor drive had been restricted, but I could not see anything actually wrong or blocked.
Engine...
OK, cleaned up the heads and valves, put a strong torch in the inlet and exhaust passages but could not see any seeping light when the valves were closed.
Looked at main and big end bearings but they seem fine, no visible copper anyway.
A few of the camshaft lobes seems slightly worn, so I'm...
Thanks PT!
Embarrasing enough I had forgotten about the distributor, it was sitting in a box i the back of the Disco (since it was removed by the dealer). I picked it up and as you can see in the pictures, the washer belongs to it. It seems plausible that the broken distributor gear dropped...
Thanks!
So it would be possible for such a small part to break the rather substantial chain?
Does anyone know where that washer is supposed to be located if it had been put in the correct place? It seems to have a quite distinct shape?
I recently adopted a D1 -96 3,9 that was stuck at the dealer with the doom "needs a new engine". Since it was much better shape in frame, body and interior than my -95 I thought it was worth looking into what was the situation with the engine.
I have now removed the engine and are taking it...
Finally I have the answer to the problem. It was the ign module that was faulty. The second one I bought (new) must have been faulty as well, but with a third one (second hand from a breaker) the Disco now starts perfectly every time.
Be structured ;)
When it doesn't start, you have the chance to trouble shoot. First, check if spark is present and check if fuel pressure is OK (with pressure gauge). If it's fuel pressure missing, you just have to find out why. First check is if fuel pump is running or not. Assuming not...
OK, welded a washer to the outer bracket hole and just welded up and redrilled the back hole. Then proceeded and adjusted steering box according to factory manual. Result is amazing, now steering is not a guess anymore, very precise and no clunking.
Worth looking at if you have a vague steering...
Took a look at this now and there is not much space to get the welder in and welding something to the backside of the bracket, the side facing the axle...
But if you tell me it's possible I just have to give it a try :)
Great stuff, thanks for the input :bigok: :bigok:
I'll cut and drill some suitable sized washers and weld in place on the bracket. It sounds like the easiest way to cure this irritating issue.
Thanks!

The bolt holes on the axle bracket for the panhard rod are worn and are allowing the bolt to move about 5mm sideways which makes steering unpleasant etc.
What would be the best method to fix this?
Thanks!
I don't think I have a LR alarm (no spider issue) in this Disco, had a 96 before which had the keyfob etc, but this one just have the keys.
However there are remains of an aftermarket alarmsystem in it, but I don't use it. Tried to disconnect the main alarm unit but then it would not crank at...
