How will I fare? I have seen picks of others doing it, so I know it can be done.

Mike,

My '03 did fine in the sand (until the transmission fluid issue). With aired down tires you'll be ok. I may have needed a little more speed or higher rpm's than CDL guys but I had no issues at all. You won't be as capable but don't let that deter you. It's a blast.

ETC is perfectly capable in the sand. I just meant that after trying all the combos (ETC, ECT and CDL, CDL) the CDL only seemed to work the best. Big disclaimer: this was not a scientific test in any way.

Sure, so they can screw me on my trade in. Not gonna happen. I'll just get lockers and be content with that for awhile.

You don't want to lock either axle until you have CDL. I put in a rear TT with no CDL in a D2 and it was hell trying to get up slick hills. The rear traction diff threw all of the torque forward (remember: open CD) causing the front wheels to spin and ETC to brake the front axle. A lot more dramatic than before with no traction diff. Once I got CDL (one day later) it was dreamy cool.

I'll be doing TT front and rear most likely (maybe Detroit rear) so hopefully it'll alleviate that somewhat. Yes I will most likely get CDL, but probably not before the lockers.

Shane,

Do yourself a favor and don't bother with the lockers yet. The CDLw/no lockers will definitely be better than Lockers w/no CDL. Further, you can get a decent used T-case for less that $1000 and reman for about $1500. Add to the equation that CDL is really a safety feature (backing down loose hills) and the answer becomes clear. Further - I would suggest a TT in both instead of DL/TT combo.

In the end it is your rig so paint purple cow pies on the hood if you want, but there are a lot of people who have been down this road before ;)

When I do get CDL it'll most likely be just adding it to my existing tcase vice getting another one altogether. From what I've read it's about the same price (probably cheaper if you do it yourself) as a used tcase and definately cheaper than a reman one.

I'm really in no huge rush to do either one since ETC alone has been more than adequate for the trails I've been doing. Stock DII's with only ETC are capable enough rigs for the time being. Plus I still have 5k left on my warranty.

If you have the CDL nub then this is a no-brainer. Email me offline and I can show you the $10 miracle that worked for me for three years. If you have no nub then you will need a new t-case.

Ooops, my bad, I forgot a factor in that equation

2004 CDL + 2(TT) - ETC = :D

I think you mean + ETC. The TT + ETC part is the magic equation. TT's bring the ETC to life and vice versa. It is like they were made to be together :D
