Posting is for my bro (from my phone so please excuse any errors)

1999 D1 newly rebuilt motor with 4.6 kit from mark at aluminum v8. Previously the engine was overheating fast which ended up being air in the system.

Suddenly when he went out to start it there is no oil pressure. Both the oil dash light and the oil pressure gauge (glowshift) show no pressure.

What to check first? (other than if there is oil of course).

Chance the oil pump died just after 3k miles?

also, be sure to check the oil pick up line in the oil pan itself. In the D1 I had I had absolutely no oil pressure and I cleaned the pick-up and everything was fine. Its a simple, but messy fix.

Oil pressure relief valve could be stuck open. On the timing cover there is a circlip, and a retaining a plug. Behind the plug is the spring that holds a ball bearing against a seat (this is the oil pressure relief valve system). If a piece of debris got around the ball bearing since the rebuild, it will hold the ball bearing off the seat, and you cannot build any oil pressure. The best thing to do is to remove the parts, clean them, reassemble, and fire the engine. let us know what you find.

I thought of the pickup screen but assumed it should be fine since the "new" motor.

Sounds good. I will definitely check that as well.

That snap-ring causes me to have nightmares.

Did not have ahold of mine when getting it out once, sucker flew up and out, rolled down driveway, and hit the curb on other side of street. Spent 2 hours looking........and found the damn thing!

Did this just happen out of the blue? Was the engine running well after the rebuild with acceptable oil pressure?

Did Mark do the shortblock assembly, or merely provide the parts for the rebuild?

I have the o-rings for the pressure relief valve. Someday, I'll have the snap-rings :D

PT,

We've been blogging back and forth regarding the overheating issue. In fact, my bro even spoke to you a few times about the motor.

It was rebuilt by a shop in town that was recommended by Marc O. here in Salt Lake.

I suppose it happened suddenly, as he went out to start it and has learned to pay close attention to the gauges he installed (water temp, oil pressure and volts).

I always heard Glowshift was junk. By the way the factory sending unit switches the light on at 5 or 6 psi I believe. You need to put a real oil pressure gauge on it but first drain the oil over a clean magnet, then pull the filter and cut it open and see if there is anything in there. You did change the oil after breaking it in right?

Oil has been changed around 3 times in the past 3k miles. It was changed just a week before the no pressure incident.

Your right, I need to manually check the pressure and check the filter. I've been avoiding it (and his phone calls) since its freakin' cold and the dang thing won't fit in his garage!

Will post updates as soon as I can get to it.

does anyone have a drawing or a exact location of the oil pressure relief valve?
