I've got a 2003 Disco that doesn't like to fully engage reverse after sitting for a day or more. Twice this week I've put it in reverse after sitting for a day & it barely moves backwards as the engine is revved. Putting it in Drive & then back into Reverse helps it fully engage.
Also, if you kick it down a gear on the highway by going to WOT, it slips a bit, then you can see and hear the RPM's waver up and down for about 3-5 seconds until it finally seems to engage fully.
It has 63K miles on it, I bought it 4,000 miles ago. It has been progressively getting worse. About a month ago I did a fluid & filter change and it had no effect on the condition.
I am planning to pick up the 2004 transfer case this spring or summer (though if I am doing a transmission now, I might do that at the same time!), then will be lifting/locking axles, etc... So, with that said, do you all think this transmission is toast? Is there just a failing component? Will it stay like this forever and continue to function?
Is there a Land Rover transmission rebuilder that can offer a more durable rebuild than just a replacement transmission? If it is just a swap-out for a refurbished unit, I would definitely do it myself. Anyone in or around Minneapolis that works on these (aside from the dealer) and does a good job?
This is my second Land Rover - and my, my first was a LR3 I picked up 3 years ago. Just in case you were wondering...
Thanks in advance for your help!!
