2003 Disco with slipping trans in reverse & 3rd - Where to go?

I've got a 2003 Disco that doesn't like to fully engage reverse after sitting for a day or more. Twice this week I've put it in reverse after sitting for a day & it barely moves backwards as the engine is revved. Putting it in Drive & then back into Reverse helps it fully engage.

Also, if you kick it down a gear on the highway by going to WOT, it slips a bit, then you can see and hear the RPM's waver up and down for about 3-5 seconds until it finally seems to engage fully.

It has 63K miles on it, I bought it 4,000 miles ago. It has been progressively getting worse. About a month ago I did a fluid & filter change and it had no effect on the condition.

I am planning to pick up the 2004 transfer case this spring or summer (though if I am doing a transmission now, I might do that at the same time!), then will be lifting/locking axles, etc... So, with that said, do you all think this transmission is toast? Is there just a failing component? Will it stay like this forever and continue to function?

Is there a Land Rover transmission rebuilder that can offer a more durable rebuild than just a replacement transmission? If it is just a swap-out for a refurbished unit, I would definitely do it myself. Anyone in or around Minneapolis that works on these (aside from the dealer) and does a good job?

This is my second Land Rover - and my, my first was a LR3 I picked up 3 years ago. Just in case you were wondering... :D

Thanks in advance for your help!!

I live in the area as well. Now as far as shops go, I do all my work myself so I don't know who to suggest.

My Disco II has no reverse gear. I am in the process of getting ready to replace my transmission as well. I'm going to put a 4HP24 in mine instead of another 4HP22. I am also putting the '04 transfer case shifter in since I can no longer use the Disco I CDL.

You may want to save yourself some troubles and take it to a Land Rover Dealer or specialty shop only...You could be dealing with an electronic and non mechanical issue.

The reverse thing sounds sort of normal, after sitting it always takes me 5-10 seconds to have "full" reverse. Not sure about the 3rd gear thing.

Well, as I was reading threads on slipping transmissions, I read this one and thought - HEY - that is exactly what mine is doing... Then I saw it was my post from a year ago! Bummer.

So I went ahead and replaced the transmission and the T-case (from a 2004), and still have a similar problem - but less pronounced. The new transmission still slips. What gives? Any ideas out there?
