uh, the 2004 can have both front and rear lockers and the lr3 can only be fitted with a OEM locker ($$$)

also no HD stuff for drivetrain on lr3

but then again owning a 2004 d2 is what i wanted, I may have considered an lr3 when buying mine but a few off road trips with one and i was sure i wanted a d2

The LR3 has a rear locker. Isnt that a plus?

yes, +1 for the locker but many negatives for the new suspension design. And many many negatives for the butt-ass ugly LR3.

I recently bought an 04 DII S model and I am very happy with it. I had a 96 and I liked that too but I'd take this DII over that, hands down.

You can always put a locker in the rear of the DII too. Do a price comparison between 05 LR3 and 04 DII + locker cost and you're still miles ahead.

Disco Pros
- More modable
- More rugged if you ask me
- Cheaper
- Easier to work on I would imagine

LR3 Pros
- Better ride
- Better interior
- Newer, current model

For mainly onroad use I'd say the LR3 is a better car. If you are really looking to do offroading then the DII is a better bet.

my family owns both a disco and an lr3. i've done light to moderate wheeling in both models. the 2004 disco has the guts and balls to do things in a way that the lr3 doesnt. however, the lr3 is spectacular compared to the d2 on road.

if you're looking for a rugged, tough truck go with the 04. if you want the refined city ride with a tendency to like dirt, the lr3 is a good choice.

probably for advertising.. most people think the LR3 is a whole new vehicle.. since the disco isn't too popular here.. but im guessing the discovery in UK is more popular so they kept the name. hence, discovery 3

This is a question that I share.

Why the newer model is not named Discovery3 in NA, as in UK and ROW??

Regards

luxury cars with a number/letter name sell higher than a actually name such as Discovery. BMW, MB, Audi, Lexus, etc all do it. its all for image. it makes the cars seem like they are a cut above, thus buyers prefer them over named models like ford and GM put out.

just a bunch of money making hullabaloo

I have both(00 DIISE7, 06LR3HSE). The way I choose which to drive is whether I want to drive the DII or let the LR3 drive me. The DII has more of a truck drive and ride. The LR3 is more of a mindless driving effort, like a car. You can corner faster without too much body roll in the LR3 but my DII is very quirky with corners. I am not talking about racing around curves, ex... 40 mph curve-DII 45 mph, the LR3 55 MPH.

As far as off-roading, stock for stock. The LR3 wins hands down. I have done the same trails, creeks and mud holes in both vehicles. The LR3 will configure drivetrain for you particular needs, again mindless driving. The DII will definately get you through the same stuff but will depend more so on the driver and not the terrain response system. I dont do any aggressive off roading in either vehicle, so I cant speak about modding and Moab.

Sounds like you will be getting the DII, which is a great vehicle. I like the LR3 for more different applications. I have an Audi TT for a daily driver, but while it was getting body work done(damn deer), I did rely on the trusty LR3 for the 40 mile commute. Good luck with your decision making

love my SE7, but i'll be getting rid of one of the third row seats, as i never use them and could really use a place to put my tools or hide things.

it's a truck, so it drives like one. huge improvement over my old blazer. as of right now, i have plans to keep this until i'm an old man.

I must disagree saying the LR3 wins. I've driven both on the same trails as you have. They both got me through just as quickly, but in two different fashions. the Lr3 would be good if you don't get your kicks from the bouncy rugged rid of a discovery. The lr3 is smooth, and the driver doesn't do shit. Its comfortable, and quick on the street, but its also a lazy ride and is quite boring on the trails stock for stock compared to a 2004 D2. I'd much rather wheel my 04 than wheel my dad's CDL. Its a much less electronically, automatic ride than the LR3. the Auto-pilot like style of the electronic terrain response system is a sweet feature, and i'd love it on the D2, but it also kills some of the thrill of something like the discoveries had.

I'm not saying the LR3 is definetly worse than a D2 stock for stock. It is a land rover, you will make it through, but the LR3 and D2 (like their on road abilities) vary greatly in the style/manner in which you arive at your destination.

You're right though, apples and oranges. The two trucks are nothing alike...all depends what suites you and your lifestyle.

haha :smilelol: , mud is boring in both cars tami. trust me, if i had a place to get all flexy, you'd bet i'd be there. Both trucks are very different, both will get you to the same place on road and off.
