Do not bother checking the ignition switch...just REPLACE the ignition switch. The symptoms you describe are that of ignition switch going bad in the ON position.

While I do not at all disagree with you, it can be so rewarding to prove one has found the culprit!

It never fails that when I jump to the end of the troubleshooting flowchart (whether written or in my head) I fall off a cliff I missed.

Sometimes, I can jump to the end, but as often, if not more often than not, I'm wrong!

Good luck boys, let's get these handsome old trucks back on the road.

I've finally decided it's time to finish the '93 SWB crash rebuild that Shoboy started wow, has it been almost five years ago! Anyway, I'm getting tired of driving a beat-up trail rig every day, time for some elegance for me again!

OK, so the Mrs lent her hands to the project a few minutes ago and I disconnected the intertia switch and had her crank the engine with her foot to the floor. After about 30 seconds of cranking it wanted to start to I reconnected the inertia switch and wham-o! It lives!!!

Have a code 48 to clear now, which makes sense as I swapped the stepper motors during this ordeal. Will do that and hopefully that's the only code. I'll post back when I have that done. If codes go away and the sucker keeps running, we'll be in good shape! I think I should still run up to Paul's and grab an intertia switch from him - just in case that was the cause all along!

Don't know if that is in fact what it was as there was a lot of other stuff that got replaced in the process. Anyway, now I've got myself all tangled up trying to get the base idle set. It was off and I was using my 9yo to help me ID where the idle was and, as luck has it, he was off a bit and now I can't keep it running.:banghead: :banghead:

The truck is warmed up now so I want to get this set while warm as I don't want to imagine how much fun it will be trying to do this when it is cold. :ack: :ack:

Wow - this is a total, and unexpected, blast from the past…. Glad to see the Discoweb threads from back in the day are still helping to keep these magnificent trucks in the roads!
As I recall - and it HAS been a very long time - after I sold my truck to Sven, the issue was found to be something with a distributor. I don’t recall exactly what, but I had replaced the external harness to it, and a few other components, and it would still sporadically reappear. Sven drove the truck without issue from my house in Connecticut, to his house in Pennsylvania. Was probably the best the truck had run in years. Made my wife at a time, quite upset that we sold it and he had no issues with it. Anyway, as I recall, it started doing the same thing for him after he had owned it for a little while. He has a couple of threads under his user ID that might provide some of the background. Had to do with something deep in the distributor, and once he fixed that, the truck was essentially invincible. I think there was a worn wire that was shorting out inside the distributor casing. Please let me know what you find out, I would love to know. Fun fact: there’s a very cool, off-road place near my house here in Texas now that specializes in Land Rovers. I drive by it on my way to Home Depot and Lowe’s and I have resisted pulling in, even though there are a number of Range Rover Classics in the yard.
