When I engage the starter, there was a 4 second delay before it would engage, would always engage on the second try, now nothing, not engaging at all. I cleaned the earth connection, no help. Will drop the starter next. Any hints on that operation??? Manual says to remove the RH O2 sensor, should I replace it while I have it off??? They can be a bugger.... Thanks in advance guys!

Sounds like you have a bad/sticking solenoid. You should also clean all of the connections and use a multimeter to check voltage at the solenoid when trying to start to make sure you're getting voltage to engage the solenoid.

In a jam, have someone hit it with a hammer a few times and if it starts, solenoid is sticking and you need a new starter. Most likely your problem.

If you hit the starter with a hammer, you run the risk of breaking a perfectly good starter if it happens to be a electrical fault, not a mechanical fault. Better to remove and bench test @ Autozone/Kragen than ruin a perfectly good starter by banging on it.

Provided you have the proper voltage to the starter, just replace the starter/solenoid and be done with it. You're going to need it eventually anyway. Why mess around?

Installed new starter from britishstarters.com. what a PITA, but installed now, no click, no engagement. Have cleaned all grounds and contacts, new multi function relay, new decel switch, new starter switch and ignition switch. Had new starter tested before install, Help, stumped, again...

Ignition switch. Mine intermittently cuts out and I get nothing from turning the key. I have one on order for my Disco. That's where to check next in my opinion.

Thanks Alastel. Been there done that. I have installed a used ignition lock and key and it came with the switch and harness, so I installed it. Today I ran a live feed into the solenoid to check if the main cables had power going in and out. It turned over just fine, just not with the key! Back tracking to the ignition switch as far as I can. Just about to the wall on this one. Any body want a nice 96 D1 SD??? Cheap??

Start at the solenoid. With your test light, look for power to the small wire. If absent, go to the relay on the right kick panel. The early trucks were plagued by water ingress and corrosion on the alarm unit and related wiring.

Thanks PT, will do. Between you and Landrover Luke, I would be lost and clueless, at least more than I am now. This site and your guys help are invaluable! You are doing the Lord's work, one Rover at a time. Did I ever tell you I owned a '70 Rover 2000TC for 13 years? That was an "interesting" vehicle also....

Thank you. I once was lost, but now I'm found, I shall be released!

I would be embarrassed to admit to how much I learned right here. Perrone Ford taught me a LOT! I'm paying it forward now, it's a heavy debt.

Trace the wires from the ignition switch to where they connect to the harness and check to make sure that the connector is not burned or corroded.
