I've searched but can find anything similar to what I'm getting. I turn the key and nothing, no clicks, I dont hear the fuel pump, doesnt turn over. If I turn the key a couple more times it finally catches and the starter cranks but engine wont start.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Would any of those cause the the intermitent crank, no crank? Fuel pump for example, when it went bad (twice already), it would crank everytime just not turn over cause no fuel.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.

A similar thing happened to me twice. I didn't get any cranking, but when the key was turned, the dash lights didn't go out and the various relays clicked, but nothing else, no drain like when the solenoid kicks in. Worse, it was intermittent. (I had it twice because I didn't replace the female crimp the first time)

Someone, here at Discoweb, had the solution.

It's the low current lead connection on the solenoid. It corrodes. You have to take off the rh (pass side) header (head and down pipe) and unbolt the heatshield. Take off the brown wire, clean up the male spade terminal and cut off the female. Replace the female with another crimp connector (a 'blue' one is correct for the gauge wire) and heat sleeve the whole lot. A gob of dielectric grease on the terminals is a good bet too. It's a fairly simple job, but get a couple of spare studs/nuts for the downpipe flange and a new metal gasket too.

I'd try that because it's only a matter of time before it needs doing and you can eliminate it from the fault finding.....

Is the car an automatic? If so it might be the P/N switch positioned on top of the automatic gearbox, that prevents the car from being started in any other positioned than P or N. The starter relay is grounded through this contact and if the switch itself is faulty the car won´t start. You can fix it by exchanging the lead coming from the switch with a direct ground but than the car will be possible to start in all gear positions. In Sweden this is controlled at the annual MOT.

For the love of God and both Baby and Adult Jesus!

Start at the beginning, using test light, look for power to the starter solenoid, presence/absence will direct further inquiry.

Tsk, Tsk, Tsk, haven't I taught you guys better? Back to remedial troubleshooting with you all.

Speedgoat has no balls and apparently doesn't know how to search.

Have you ever tried smacking the steering column a couple of times when you get this no-response situation? I had an ignition switch going out in a '98 and that made it work most of the time.
