You can't bring back the meat at all, not even the Biltong (sort of like jerky but not as dry and salty, delicious!). You eat the meat in camp, the staff eats some and the rest gets sold in some areas or goes to local villages in others. In Africa NO protein gets wasted.

Kevin N.Y.

Kevin
i just found your image station safari.

why didnt you tell me YOU SHOT AN ELAND!!!

AND A VERY NICE KUDU.and a Gemsbuck,
i shoot or stick an impalla every trip as kind of a marker animal symbolising each trip i make.

on my trip in may 04 i brought spears made by coldsteel and speared a Kudu by hand in a slow crawl stalk.i wounded him (not realy it was a lung stick ) and he ran off.he was found dead and decayed a week later so i only got the skull.

you were in the limpopo province. this is close to or part of where the cave house is that we stay in rsa.the cave house is north west of ellisra.

very nice animals i only saw your piggy a while back but never looked at your album.

my fist animal in afrika my first trip was a blesbok also.

i always wanted an eland but they always came to me when i had a bow and i would not risk wounding and paying for it.

i chased zebra for days before i got a shot at a stallion and i still have to get a blue wildebeast.

just many reasons to go back.

if no one minds i will continue to post some pics when i get the time.

i think im the only one looking at myself here anyway.

The eland was the highlight of the trip for me, taken on a running quartering away shot at 40 yards with 5 minutes of daylight to go. We spotted him from about 400 yards crossing a little two track and took off running full speed 300 yards to close the gap with light failing. I had just spent an hour on my hands and knees closing on a herd but never having a shot at a bull. This guy was alone and past his prime living out his days alone when we crossed paths. We got him into the back of my PH's truck with one flashight,5 guys and a handwinch. Amazing what you can do when there is no other option. The next night we ate the tender loin, stuffed with mushrooms and ham, baked and sliced around the fire, amazing. 1500 pounds.

absolutley awsome
every trip my buddy and i make we talk about taking an eland so we can taste the sweetest antelope in afrika.

what calibre ?
how did you have him mounted?
shoulder i hope.
they make a beautiful shoulder mount.i love the color of the skin.

you made my mouth water with the receipe.

when i shot my kudu we split open his upper thigh bones , removed the tube of marrow ,
stuffed it in the tender loin with spices tied it all up and slow roasted over open fire.
the best meal i can ever remember having in all my trips.

are you still planning another trip.?
do you set up your own or go through an outfitter? travel agent?
do you go as solo hunter or with friends and your wife.

my friend and PH Rassie is looking to set up a real wild trip to Cameroon to hunt for pigmy elephant and possibly Bongo, deep in the cameroon jungle.we /he will hire local pigmys to transport our gear and we will backpack in.we will drive up from RSA.
we have been discussing / bullshiting about this for 2 yrs now but getting the permits is very difficult.maybe 2008.and most of all not ridiculously expensive.

as for now im looking foward to sticking a leopard in 06.the cave house area has many leopard , we had one drinking from the pool at 4am one morning on our way into the bush.
4000.00 for the leopard licence 2000.00 for accomadations at the cave house.
i will use my airline benefits (passes) so no airfare.
please post pics with the always facinating story of the persuit.
i wounded a piggy with an arrow in 2000 never got him.
a friend went in 2001 and stuck my piggy again for good.
he handed me back my Rocket head with 6 inches of carbon shaft.
stories of a lifetime.
please share.

happy hunting

jim.

I used a custom 35 Whelen built on an FN mauser action with a fiberglass stock and a 1.5-5X leupold, it's a very business like rifle and perfect for the bush. If you look closely at the shoulder down low in the photo you will see a white slash, that is where the bullet came to rest under then skin and I cut it out. Quartering away running shot, best game shot of my life. He will be shoulder mounted on one side of my fireplace, the kudu will be on the other. My taxidermy is on the ship as we speak should have it in a month. The picture does not give justice to his forehead mat, it is huge and thick. I wanted an old bull with "good hair" and worn horns and I got him. I like animals with character not neccesarily high scoring measurements.

35 whelan cool calibre
the 458 i used on my buff is an FN mauser action also.
the calibre killed my whole body not only my shoulder when sighting at the range.
in the bush with buff all around me , my adrenalin flowing i never thought about the kick.
not even a bruise .

cool stuff

You guys are getting me all spooled up with all this African safari talk. Got me finally doing some serious research for a cape buff hunt and some plains game. I am going to get a ruger express magnum in 458 lott for the trip. I will probably take my 340 Weatherby also.

340 is a hammer for larger plains game IF you shoot it well, but not neccesary. An '06 does fine. Same goes for the Lott but it's a more appropriatte tool for when buff is on the menu. My guy is www.numzaan.com

With my 340 I am good to 300 yards offhand for a 12 inch kill zone, and 500 meters with a rest. From what I have read it rarely requires such a long shot. Of course if the game is moving I do not like to take shots outside of 100 yards regardless. I would love to have a .600 nitro express double rifle, or even a .470 nitro but I could go on a pretty nice hunt for the cash it would take for those rifles. That is why I will settle for the Ruger in 458 lott. I am mostly interested in buff, lion, and leopard, but would not pass up some plains game.

Buff is doable, add lion and leopard and there are few places for the combo and you are talking 21 days and 50 grand.

[ I am mostly interested in buff, lion, and leopard, but would not pass up some plains game.[/QUOTE]

IMO the only place you will get a true lion hunt, meaning a good full pride to stalk and shoot is tanzania.

yes zambia is good also but lion are not as wild in zambia as in tanzania.
my PH hunted lion with a bow with some clients in zambia.
they hunted 22 days were pushed out of their tree stand by elephant.
the hunt turned out unsuccessful UNTILL they were on the road home and the client shot a young male on the side of the road.
i saw the whole video.elephant , tree , and lion sleeping on side of road and ofcourse the shot and kill.

tanzania on the other hand has alot more wild lion and a better chance But its very very expensive. my knowledge comes from talking B.S. around the campfire with the people who know on many occassions.besides my buddy wants a real wild lion and our PH plans on doing it in Tanzania some day after Cameroon.
we my buddy and i dont need to have our asses totally kissed on safari and our ph knows this so we ruff it a bit and pay a little less. YOU do have the choice.

Leopard is very abundant and reasonably cheap in RSA.
imo its not sporting to shoot a leopard with a rifle from a blind.
so im doing it with a bow.

On the other hand i have seen leopard while glassing for plains game in rsa from a high vantage point.
if i had the permit i would have shot it.
later i was told to shoot and worry about the permit later.

to late.

jim

ps
im back from a road trip and will continue to post some pics if no one minds of course.

Kevin if your ever up for a white tail hunt in N.Y. we could talk alot of shit around the fire while we butcher our deer and roast some over the brie (bry) (brei) (bbq)

My Steinbok (Steenbok)

While Exploring The Karoo at night in the back of a Land Cruiser with firearms , alcohol and a flash light i shot this awsome steenbok with great horns.
its full grown and its a very nice trophy.
night hunting and silenced firearms are legal.
silent is incouraged so as not to spook the whole bush.
