So I had a friend come to me about Amway, pitching the idea of becoming an IBO, Independent Business Owner. I've had a close friend lose his ass in the company and I have yet another friend, not the one trying me to start, that actually does pretty well with Amway and makes about $850/Week. I've always thought of it, as most people do, a pyramid scheme, and a cheap-ass way to "own your own company" that sells some other companies products. I don't think I'll get into it, it's not my idea of entrepreneurship, Just looking for input/comments/complaints/etc..

It's a pyramid scheme, just like any multi-level direct marketing model (Avon, Kirby, etc) It does work, but it's hard work, which is why everyone would rather recruit people to work underneath them. A lot of the reps are pretty weird too... like the Mormons who knock on doors.
BTW, I have used some of their products in the past (household cleaners, shoe polish etc). They were good, but I could get good stuff at the store, so why bother with ordering from a rep?

Apparantly now you don't have to order through a rep, now its website based so you can order online IIRC..

Ya, I think Shaklee is like that now too. However, if my wife runs out of lemon Pledge and wants it now... the grocery store in a mile away. Also, as a tightwad extraordinaire, I'm not sure how Amway's unit pricing compares to other brands, of which, I can use a coupon and take advantage of store value cards & sales. Maybe I'll check out their online pricing and make some comparisons.
Oh, one thing I noticed lately is that Amway is advertising on TV... weird, but you wonder why these direct-marketing companies don't do it more often.

I did Pre-Paid Legal for a little while. Same principle- pyramid setup. Worst decision of my life. I had a friend that got me in. He was averaging $2k a week, (seriously) so naturally I thought I could do well. Nope. Got out after 6 months of empty promises and brain washing.

Boy does it bring back some memories... a guy knocked on our door in Detroit trying to sell us into Amway... and ended up buying a computer from me.

none of your fucking business
Reed, my mom got into every pyramid scheme I think there ever was.

She wasted a lot of time, a lot of energy, and even more money.

The worst part is, she's addicted to it. She still won't stop.

The right kind of person can make a lot of money in MLM. You have to be some odd mix of salesman cheerleader, and pimp. My dad got hooked up with this snake oil magnet company when I was a teenager. They guy who signed him up would fax my dad copies of the 15k checks he was getting each month. But to do that you have to sit down with people you know aren't salesman and sell them the dream.

Marty Powell, Will Tillery and I have a plan to set anyone up as a Land Rover parts and service magnate.

Just imagine how excited your friends will be to hear that they too can cash in on the incredible growth opportunities in the growing Land Rover parts and service business.

They will be more than happy to have multiple disassembled trucks in their yards, parts on the kitchen table and phone calls at all hours of the day/night.

Hurry now, small fortunes are waiting to be made, all that is required is a large fortune to start with.

Please make checks payable to PTSchram. You will not be Schramboozled! This is a serious business opportunity for the right person!

Call now and we'll include a set of Ginsu knives.

I think I have some of those magnates. Called manpower or something. Little gold disks you put on your wrist or something. 80's flashback...

PT that was funny about a Land Rover MLM... That's the Reason Nathan and i got out of it.. All said and done after hours of emails from Cheep Bastard Disco owners it was not much above minimum wage... Funny it wasn't the cost of the parts that got to most people it was shipping $$$$$

I did the Kirby thing back in the early 80's what a racket... To make a sale and get the POS down to a realistic price you had to strip off all your commission... The 2 tier's above would not budge on inch on their commission... After selling 45 machines in a 6 month period i came out on the negative...

LOL....Amway

Sign up now and YOU can be that annoying guy at the party, at all your family gatherings, at every work function! Hello, nice to meet you, can I interest you in some cleaning products?

If you can order all that shit online, what the fuck do you need an "Independent Business Owner" for anyway? To act as the liason between your computer and the internet? Independent Business Owner....LOL....yes, YOU too can be unique...just like everyone else.

My mom does that crap. My dad's in some other "you can benefit from paying your bills" thing. Neither of them I am interested in. Both of them have lied to me to get me to go to one of their stupid meetings, which made me hate it even more. Wasted time, wasted breath, wasted space. They buy into that stuff because they think they're going to get rich. I have enough money to pay my bills, I'm all set.

Thinking bout joining PT's idea though. ;-)
