Any solutions for the weak D2 CV's ?

Are there any options to remedy the weak CV's in a D2 other than dumping big money on HD axles/CV's? Are there any CV's that are avalible alone that are stronger that stock? Also, I read somewhere that some people were using a steel band arond the outside of the actual CV joint itself to add stength. Is this possible. I have broke me driverside fairly easily before and don't want to worry. Also need to re-boot them, so thought it would be a good time to try something to add strength if possible. Seems like the weak link is the CV's first, and then the axle shafts once running lockers. Only running 285/60/18's on stock diffs, no lockers.

Nope. There were rumors that the range rover sport cv would work with custom axle shafts,

Best is to just swap axles. I went Toyota fzj80.

How much did the Toyota swap cost? Did you do the ones that have e-lockers factory?

Have you broke a d2 cv joint??

I broke one about a year ago. It broke way easier than I thought it would. Then yesterday a friend of mine broke one in his D2 fairly easy. In my D1 I beat on it pretty hard and nothing ever broke. With my D2 I try to be easy on it. Had the driver wheel stuffed in the wheel well, other side unweighted, climbing a soft hill, spinning a bit (not fast), turned the wheel a bit trying to get traction and it popped. I dont want this to happen in Uwharrie or somewhere that is a long drive from home.

See Lucky8:

Ashcroft Discovery II Heavy Duty Half Shafts and CV Kit

About $700

I've seen these, but that is alot of money. Didn't know if there was any better options. And by better I mean cheaper, but suitable for unlocked diffs and not huge tires

Hmm what broke? The bell or the shaft?

Kyle has open fj80 axles but the CVs/"birfields" are massive on those axles.. Ashcrofts are your best bet $$ wise

The inner part broke (not the outer bell) into a million pieces.

Buy used CV's and axles from Will Tillery as back up. Thats the cheap option

Yea, I got my last used one from DrAaron as he is local and good to me, but dont really want to attempt this repair on the trail or camp site.

So the "cage" broke? I guess I don't understand how wrapping it would prevent that from happening? I recommend the Ashcrofts cause crazy Mike runs q78s on them with lockers and hasn't broke them yet..

never broke one. but went from 32's to 35's with the swap. 37's was the plan but I couldn't justify it at the time. so I'm going to wear out the 35's then re-gear and do 37's.

you could cut your own brackets and reuse the radius arms and be in it for cheap if you wanted, but i chose to go balls out and 3link the front and a-arm link the rear. also maintining that the only parts that I cant walk into a dealer (toy or rover) and replace a piece is the links themselves (oh and actual axle housings, but if that breaks im in a whole lot of trouble anyway...). Anything else is off the shelf fixable to get home.

edit, the increase in braking ability may be worth the swap alone. it flat stops now.

Yea, I wasnt really sure how reinforcing the outer would help either, but thought maybe people were doing something to make them stronger or had found an alternative CV that worked better.

So is the gerneral thought on here that it was a freak thing and not likely to happen again? Or are other breaking these easily as well. I was really surprised that it broke when it did. I dont even have super agresive tires, just Terra Grapplers, and I wasnt being hard on it. It sucks to break something just playing around, then wondering what might happen if I were somewhere remote in some more difficult stuff.

I guess mine is a ticking time bomb! I have 180,000 on stock drivetrain and I wheel it fairly often, also with Nitto's.
This past URE in October Rick broke a C/V in his 04. He did it on Dicky bell which is a steep hill with loose rock.
He had to winch himself to the top, and had Will T bring him a used spare..and we all helped him fix it at camp. Wasnt that bad of a job.. as long as you have a big enough socket and breaker bar.

I've had mine up dickey bell, not a place where I want to fix stuff (or try to make it back off the trails in 2wd). But it would have made may more sense if I broke it there. Mine broke on a loose dirt hill with ruts and dug out spots. Wasn't too bad to fix, but I hate worrying about it. Would love to put some trutracs in the truck, but then it would really be an issue.
