CAT impliment paint, it's the toughest paint I've ever used and it comes in black, and the super sweet Catapiller yellow. Just because the bottom will get scratched is no reason to let the top rust and Hurculiner on an axle housing is just dumb IMO.

Does it already have a coating of surface rust? POR-15

Out here, east of the Mississippi, every thing has a coat of rust. Out west, YMMV...

But Catapiller yellow would be cool on your XD

Black rustoleum, bought in quart cans at Wal-Mart or Lowe's and a cheap brush. Cheap, durable, easy to touch-up.

It's an axle housing for God's sake, worrying about painting them makes Baby Jesus cry!

haha, I'm not looking for something that's going to make the girls scream, just a paint that is durable. I'm not looking for a "Rock proof" paint, but something that won't be flaking off in a year or two. I think I'll just hit it with a can of the stuff I linked to.

Rustoleum never worked for me when durability was of any concern.

We're painting a 1/4" thick steel axle housing. Do we really need durability? I'd think something to cover the metal to keep it from rusting too much would be plenty. If ti gets scratched, scrape it down, apply some more and get to it!

It's not as though folks are going to be looking at your axle housing and be impressed with the finish. Rust won't be a problem if you keep an eye on it.

Paul, where's the axlehousing 1/4"-thick? It sure feels lighter, and sounds much more hollow.
But that doesn't matter - I found that, short of really good surface preparation, few paints stick well/long to something that gets exposed to sandblasting, water, and oil leaks. POR15 proved itself a pretty nasty booger.

OK, I have no experience with POR-15. Living in Indiana, I just pretty much accept that the same processes that allow life on earth to exist are going to eventually eat my vehicles (reduction/oxidation/entropy) :banghead:

If POR-15 is that good at keeping paint on a surface AND preventing rust, go for it! Maybe I'll give it a try someday. I have had good luck with spray degreasers, soap and water and Rustoleum, but recognize it isn't for everyone. My goal-probably from many years of working in factories-is to stop any corrosion today. We'll just add more paint down the road!

W/R/T tube thickness, I just measured one, 0.270" thick, everywhere but the diff cover where it's sheetmetal. Yes, just as you expected, I had a cut open axle housing and micrometer handy! I should post a pic as I was really surprised to find how thick the axle housings are.
