I like Mobil 1 synthetic, there's no problem with switching IMHO (YMMV); I'd suggest the same weight you're using; I use Purolator filters.

FWIW....

I've got mine comming up too but my D1-4.0 has got 125k under its belt...I'd like to switch to Synthetic. Would anyone see any reason for me not to??? I use 10-40 all year round here in Sunny, STEAMING Hot Miami, FL. The engine's never had any problems whatsoever and runs like a dream. Planning on switching over to M1 from Quakerstate and Penzoil (my 4.0 didnt like Pennzoil). If i go Syn., what weight should I use???

Any thoughts on the K&N Gold Filters?

I've never had a problem. I once switched a car with 185k miles over to synthetic. It doesn't leak any more than it did :D

Brand recommendations for Mineral Oil

I'm in the same situation as Chillywater.

I'm getting ready to do an oil change and will be using 20w50
but I can'd decide which brand to use.

I want to use good old mineral oil instead of synthetic.

Anyone have any recomendations for non-synthetic brands

Thanks
Brian

My favorites for my DII:

Synthetic - Amsoil
Non-Synthetic - Rotella
Always use K&N 3001 oil filter.

I use the NAPA Gold filter and M1 5w/30.

Brian, might I ask why you use 20w/50? I used that in only during the summer in my mostly track prepared porsche. Seems a little heavy for a daily driver? FWIW I used Valvoline 20w/50 with good results-

Mobil 1 and oem filter
Castrol non-synth in the trunk in case I need an emergency change.

Anyone using 0-40?

So far it looks like Castrol and Valvoline are the most popular for non-synthetic.

-- 20w50 does seem heavy doesn't it, that's what I thought too but all recommendations I have gathered puts it at the top of the list. The main factor in chosing this wieght oil is that I live in Phoenix Arizona AKA The Surface Of The Sun. Yesterday it was 115 degrees F and the day before that it was 112! I just moved to town so I asked the local Rover Group and that's what they recommended, I even called the local LR dealership and thats what they recommended to. The dealership uses a lighter grade for daily driver but they use 20w50 if you do both daily driver and offroad use. In the AZ winter I will switch to 10w30 especially if I go up into the mountians.

Syoug - there are a couple of guys out here using straight 50 and 60 weight.

Thanks for all the great input!

Oh and Chillywater, Thanks for letting me hijack your thread!
I hope it helped you too.

I can't see the justification for the extra $ for synthetic (it starts as conventional oil...). If you change your oil every 3000 miles, to a great extent, it won't matter what oil you use. It all meets the same API specs.

I use the NAPA oil and their filters (p/n 21515)-and, I change every 3000 miles on all of my roadworthy Rovers.

Peace,
PT

It's worth the money. I have always used it. I'll park the car before I'll pour dino oil in the crankcase and actually drive.

They didn't go and spend billions developing the stuff and improving it just to trick you. If you don't want to spend the money, that's one thing. You can't use the specs as a performance cap, nor can you measure a synthetic oil's benefits by their limited standards.

Cheers,

Kennith

I use Castrol Synthetic blend 20w-50 along with some Lucas Synthetic Oil Stabilizer and the K&N HP-3001 oil filter. This was strongly suggested by a retired Land Rover underwriter. I have no complaints and put on over 30,000 miles per year on the ol' girl - I put even more on the Landie........ ;)

Same here, I commute 120 miles a day, and change my oil every 3-4k miles. I buy whatever major brand is on sale. 10-W40 in the summer, 10-W30 in the winter. I also use 1 quart of Lucas oil stabilizer.

The motor just hums along, the valve train noise quieted down once I started with the lucas.

Filters are Wix 51515 ($4.24each in a case of 12)

D1 150k miles
D1 90k miles
D1 131k miles
