Bought a Jeep

I was thinking about picking up one of those for fun, but I was disappointed that the roof only comes in removable sections. I thought they offered a full body.

Then, that feeling left me immediately when I saw the price tag. I paid $42,888 for my DII; a Land Rover, with tons of features, many of which I ended up removing, but that's not the point.

That's a fair amount of money, but aside from values today and what we might think, I got a shit-load of car for that money, and it's served me well for years through hell and back.

Then I see the prices at the Chrysler lot...

Those fucking Jeeps are high, man. It's crazy. You can really dump some cash into them by the time you get anything worth a fuck. When I ran through the "build your own" section on the web site, I ended up pretty far out there.

Cheers,

Kennith

My neighbor had an LR3 since new in 2005.
He traded it on a lexus. or a toyota. a lexus i think.

We had 2 jeeps & 2 range rovers.
When my '00 RR shat the bed, it didn't make economic sense to dump a shitload of money into it.
So it's gone, and we have 3 jeeps and 1 range rover.
The '05 RR is getting long in the tooth, and expensive repairs are on the horizon.

I love the '05 RR, it's a REALLY nice car.
My wife wants a Rubicon Unlimited, so that's what she'll get.
The RR goes away, I get her '01 grand cherokee.

Wife is happy, I'm happy.

Simple as that.
I'm not making or losing friends based on what car I drive.

There is a full-body convertible, but I've only seen it as a soft top. I rented the 4-door hard top with removable panels for a week in FL. Made for a lovely ride tooling along dirt roads in nature preserves. I liked being able to stop the Jeep, climb up onto the roof directly from the front seats, and sit there watching birds. I even drove around on some sandy tracks in 4 low, hardly a workout but it did fine with highway tires.

After that week I got a glimpse into why people like these things. I also understood better that this is not the vehicle for me. There was nothing about the truck that made me want to care about it. Taste is subjective and the sales data don't lie, but I'll stick with my Disco and all its quirks. Maybe it's the devil I know.

If you like the 05 RR why not replace it with a newer and more reliable Jag engine version?

Because his wife want's what she wants. Come on Eric how long you been married now? I say what he says " If Moms happy, everybody happy" Every damn thing that ever goes wrong with the Range will be an issue. Every time it needs a strut or whatever and she don't get what she had been planning on doing instead, old Jim is going to pay heavy.

This.
And most of us have enough LR experience to know it's "when" not "if".

31 years in June. :)

28 in july. Long marriages are a thing of the past.

Do all wranglers have nylon webbing to limit how far the door opens?

Seriously. It is a cheap bastard Defender. You own them to be cool. In reality they bite and the only thing fun is they are convertable.

accurate. We're very unusual compared to our kids' friends' families.

as far as I know, yes.

So I should spend twice as much on a vehicle that's not legal in US?
Or buy a 20 year old US legal version for the same price?
No thanks.
