It's a DD. And part of that total includes some unfucking here and there; also a few things that weren't strictly necessary. OEM rubber floormats, working clock, new rubber seals for the rear glass; that sort of thing.

accurate. We're very unusual compared to our kids' friends' families.

as far as I know, yes.

So I should spend twice as much on a vehicle that's not legal in US?
Or buy a 20 year old US legal version for the same price?
No thanks.

No, they both suck. Poorly designed uncomfortable wannabe vehicles. Nylon webbing for doors? I have slighty higher expectations for 40k vehicle. Every one I have been in since 2000 is a huge POS. If someone forced me I'd go with a solid jeep with inline 6 way before anythjng new.

Well, I guess I can pile on also. I have had just about everything BUT a jeep. Toyota's by the bunch, early 60's up into the '80's. Nissan's as well, not a Patrol yet but I do keep my eyes open. Had a G wagon for a short time, wheeled it, couldn't afford to keep it on the road. Ford, GM too, no Dodges yet. The first Land Rover I rode in was when I was 7 or 8. It was a 109 five door, be longed to a friend of my dad. Loved then since, still want a series truck. I have had two Disco's and all I can say is, thank god for a cheap 4WD. I now have two Disco's again a garden variety '95 and a 300TDI '95. I guess I'll fix the gaser cause it's worth noth'in as a parts truck so fix it and use it!

That's my general impression of the Defender. And wildly overpriced.

AFAIK, that's just the stoppy-thingy. There's actual hinges. :)
The nylon webbing is probably as strong as the typical jinky little metal things most mfgs use.

The '01 Grand Cherokee we have has the 4.0L inline 6.
It just works. No bullshit.
There's only 110K miles on it, so I should be driving it for a while.

Careful with the head. The 0331 casting on late 99s to early 01s are prone to cracking right in the middle. Just keep an eye on coolant level. Aside from that and the oil pump drive (I think) on the late motors from 04-06 they are bullet proof.

Good luck. I havent seen one get much past 150k without massive oil consumption and blowby

a 4.0? That's just the nature of the beast. They have the loosest tolerances on earth. Run 'em with Rotella 15w-40 and call it a day. If you are bored, pop the valve cover off and clean out the CCV orifices and the like. Not like Rover is much better as far as leaks go...

258, 4.0, any of the amc 6. seen one so bad that it could bounce the oil fill cap around like a tea kettle lid

tolerances arent any different than the other makes of that vintage

Perfect timing. My cousin just placed a custom order for a Rubicon Hard Rock.

No telling what he wanted done differently. He's very unpredictable.

Cheers,

my brother had one spin a connecting rod bearing at 110

not surprised. 110 MPH is pretty fast for a Jeep, motor was probably revving hard :D

Anyone can get a POS, my buddy's mom's Camry blew a baseball sized inspection hole through the block at 130k. The 4.0 is one of the few motors that regularly goes to 250k with no issues. I mean, everything around it goes to shit but the motor is fine.
