Here here!

And yes, what porsche will allow puppy to fit is important, after all we cannot have her ride in the thule box as she has grown too big. :D

I Like Ike!

What is wrong with the "Eisenhower-esque complacency and opulence." No one harks back with reverence to the 1970s, the way they do for the 1950s.

Maybe this should have been a poll, but I have enjoyed the thread.

Eureka!

Ron,

I think I have the solution for you.

You want something that serves well as a commuter, something more-or-less reliable. However, you want something fun to drive, sporty. Nothing rice. You want something that can carry both Fluffy Puppy and Alyssa along at the same time. You have a preference for something British. Don't necessarily want to break the bank. Something with more class than a Honda or a Toyota, but maybe not as pompous as a Bentley or an Aston....

You need a Mini Cooper S........

That's my suggestion.......

Leslie,

How are you? You going to be at MAR?

Mini, I got one as a loaner from BMW thinking I would really like it but it just did not do it for me. XJR is what I want, but given the time contraint I think I am going to end up with an XJ6 or XJ8 as 95-97 XJRs are not growing on trees around here.

The 70s, no, but why not shirk your own stereotype by trading in the Bimmer for a Eurovan with a handpainted postmodern flower motif?

Only then will you transcend noveau-riche convention.. :p

What happened to the hideous beauty of being and nothingness?

Rilke said it perfectly: For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror, which we are still just able to endure, and we are so awed because it serenely disdains to annihilate us. Every angel is terrifying.

Although, and I must digress here, perhaps you will suffer this fate, in its unenlightened form, by purchasing a vehicle condemned with the undying agony of all the starving intellectuals of the world...

I wear birkenstocks, even in winter, but not to interviews.

In college I drove a scout rather than a new black suburban.

Can't a jealous guy have a little fun. ;)

After all, it is the destiny of the have-nots to make the haves feel guilty.

I had a mini as a loaner from BMW. I was not a big fan. No way to get it to hook up.

I like the new Lotus but it was a bit short on headroom.

This might be the dumbest thread I have ever scanned over on dweb. "I'm not sure should I get the porsche, my beemer is broke again."
Ron just go buy whatever you want. You can't justify most of your choices as a commuter car. No problem just buy the damn thing. Commuter cars are not meant to be exciting, and exciting cars are not meant to be reliable. I also think you would be suprised what the people at the firm really think. If the senior partners are fine with it that is one thing, it is your assistants and secretarys that make things happen, and they not think to highly of the new guy and his european sports car. Having said that screw it get a 360 modena spider.

Ron,
Congrats on the future employment!

Get a Jag....my dad picked up a 97 XJ6 Vanden Plas in near perfect condition, 55K for $12K...which was too much but he loves it. Beautiful car. That's what I want for a commuter.

HOWEVER, why is it that you are selling all the off-roaders?! Are you coming to MAR? You and Alyssa and fluffy puppy NEED to come! Well, atleast we would like to have you there...

Have fun with the cars and post a pic if you get an old Ferrari. I want a 97 456 GT...but yeah, that's not going to happen.

Or you could go with the more recent incarnation of that multi-color theme: The Harlequin Golf (bleah!)

I'm not going to MAR because I am going to LR3 training in Ottowa & the two conflict with each other. Ron is going to MAR. ...and lets not revisit the dogs at MAR issue... :)

We are selling the off-roaders because we never had the chance to use them anymore-- and if we ever do anything, it's nothing so extreme a stock Land Rover wouldn't work just fine. Ron goes out occasionally, but he'll usually just tag along with someone else. Rather than be "posers" and drive off-roaders we rarely use as daily drivers, which I know some members of this board intensely detest, we got rid of them and started driving vehicles more fit for purpose. We also still have the '59, which is amazing off road.

Our Porsche sales lady just called, and told me that the seats shift in the back to make a flat floor, so maybe that would be ok after all. I'd still rather have Ron get the cheap car and me get the nice one....

Alyssa,
I hope you have fun in Ottawa! We will miss you in Va. Oh, and our dog will be staying at home as well....too many risks there with more vehicles present.

Speaking of dogs (warning: topic digression) my brother & sister-in-law just got a Golden Retriever puppy about 3 months ago...he is growing FAST but he has issues with TEETHING people! Any suggestions? Did you have a similar problem? He's going to be huge and really a good dog, he just likes to chew on my ARM!

Hmmmm...maybe you need the Porsche and Ron can get the old Jag! :)

Can't help you with the puppy. Our Puppy still constantly eats Ron's hands. She started it when she was older & it's more of a game. One thing that works well is to grab the dog's muzzle after she bites, hold it firmly and say NO. Fortunately, other than the one drywall episode, she never really ate anything other than food or her toys.

And I was thinking more along the lines of I need a new Range Rover, and Ron needs an old Jag!

Well, I saw her reprimand this one about 5 times in a row and it didn't sink in! I got lucky, my dog doesn't mouth or chew anything but food!

I agree 100% Alyssa...get the RRIII! After driving one, I'm sooooo in love. And Ron will have fun with the Jag.

PROBLEM SOLVED! :)
