I'm shopping for a code reader that will work on my Discovery 2002 and 2004. Not looking for the most expensive, just one that will identify and clear codes. Anyone have any advice?

Torque pro app for your phone or tablet. Then Google ELM327 that's the part that connects to the OBD2. Grand total of $25. Depending on if you have apple or android you will need to get the appropriate adapter. Apple uses WiFi and Android uses Bluetooth.

I used Torque Pro on the D1. Now, it's in The Wife's Sonata. You can set up profiles for multiple vehicles so you won't have to go to the auto parts store to read a code.

Depends what codes you're talking about. The iCarsoft i930 is a bit more money, but it will read and clear just about everything. It won't change settings though, at least not as far as I know.

If you want to be able to change things on your D2, a nanocom is the best choice, in my opinion.

I also use Torque on my D2. Note that it is essentially limited to reading/clearing ECU codes and monitoring live data (actually its strongest point, IMHO). It will not read/clear ABS/SRS codes or communicate with other modules.

The Autel ML619 will not support ABS / SRS on 1996 Discovery. Their site supports 1998 and newer.

I have the icarsoft CR 2 , can load up to 5 different types of vehicle readers, supports ABS, brake bleeding, parking brake release, all the basic stuff.

Thanks for the quick response on a 2016 thread. :)

I already have an expensive HawkEye scantool with the BA5076 Security dongle. Now I am told the BA5077 ABS / SRS dongle is needed to turn off the SRS light. This is turning into a expensive money grab for another $100.00 dongle.

I was just ready a thread and hoping to learn how to modify an OBD2 cable that can work with my HawkEye yo turn off the SRS light. It was said the BA5077 adapter is just a pin shifter.

Fingers crossed:)

Been searching the code reader threads. There are a few already so I thought I'd piggyback on this one. The recommendations I've come across are mostly old (but possibly still relevant?). I'm going to need an OBD2 scanner for my '98 D1. This will be my first scanner so my knowledge/experience is nill. There's a two fold price difference between the Autel ML619 and icarsoft CR 2 scanners mentioned above. Justified? I've got an intermittent engine dash light I need to diagnose, fix, and clear. Thanks,

Are you sure you need a tool with that kind of capability? For reading and clearing CEL codes a garden variety scanner will do fine. I use an OBD Link Bluetooth dongle connected to my phone running the Torque app. Pretty user-friendly setup. You can buy the dongle used on ebay, the app is about $5.

No, I guess I'm not sure at all. New territory for me. I'll look into what you've suggested. Thank you for your help.

I think you've answered your own question. Start with an inexpensive, user-friendly, simple option. It will always be useful. If you find later you need something with more capabilities, your initial purchase will still be money well spent.
