I'm actually just jealous he is going to the Rally.

I hope to make it to Moab some day (AT tires and all)!

Now, someone find him some Rover wheels for sale at the event ;)

Actually, when the rock becomes slick, I'd say that ATs work MUCH BETTER than MTs, but what the fuck do I know.

Paul, you really need to get out of the midwest and experience some wheeling other than mud. A/Ts work just fine in Moab. Ask my brother or Marc Olivares.

LOL, when I was in the PNW, it seemed as though mud was all there was, even fewer rocks than in the UP.

I readily admit to needing to get out of the midwest. Another plan is in the works.

As far as being snobbish, I don't think my disdain for Freelanders is snobbery, it's merely the result of seeing too many of them having their engines removed for the second or third time. When I was in PDX, the sales manager's son's truck had been through two transmissions and was in for its third engine when he traded it on a BMW. Land Rover approved all of the swaps under warranty and the Classic department had a huge pile of new engines and transmissions as they'd sold so many Freelanders.

I have had three Freelanders in my shop. Two needed engines and one a transmission. None of them left under their own power, nor did they arrive under their own power.

MT's aren't all they're cracked up to be out here in the desert. But they sure do look cool! I'll probably be going with BFG AT's when it's time for new tires.

anyone remember these?

I wheeled one back in the early 80's and it had low range and a rear locker factory...the damn thing could make a CJ5 look smaller and smaller in the rear view mirror off road:rofl:

While this is often becoming the case for Freelanders, at least this guy is using his - and seemingly enjoying it. I am suprised that LR was still approving warranty replacements while you were in PDX - those that were approved must have still been under the 4yr/50k. APCO doesn't seem to want to touch them beyond that.

Even with my lift kit mine is still under warranty. If I'm not mistaken the Freelanders y'all have seen with problems have been before the face lift.

(1997-2003 Europe)
(2001-2003 North America)

In 04 they made a "face lift" version, mine is an 05, for the face lift they changed the looks a little obviously but they beefed up the suspension, chassis, drivetrain, rotating assembly and transmission.

So... lifted freelander with 40,000+ miles and no problems is what I have sitting in my garage right now.

To the rest of you, thanks, at least I know some people will enjoy the pics I post on here later on.

Also I would take my Range Rover to Moab but I'd like to drive something with a working cruise control and 23mpg

I am very aware of the changes made to the product. Facelift=Facelift. Still the same KV6 engine, trans, etc. Cosmetically facelifted interior and exterior, nothing changed in regards to anything mechanical - sorry to inform you. You are correct that you are under warranty for 4 years/50,000 miles, except for those components that could be marginalized by your suspension lift, i.e - CV's, diffs, etc..

I am glad you are using it - I am sure you have fun with it - and certainly enjoy your trip to the rally!

Yes it's the same motor, but the internals are stronger. Just like the internals on the '03 Cobra motor are stronger than the '03 Mach 1 motor.

They are both 4.6L DOHC but one is supercharged.

Also, suspension components aren't covered in warranty, not even the 10 year 100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty mine has.

Why in the world did you put Ford Explorer wheels on a Freelander?

Even without the center caps that say FORD they still look like Explorer wheels!!

(Among other questions)
So, Camaro wheels on DII is acceptable but not Explorer wheels on the Freelander? Seems fucked up to me. The explorer wheels look better anyway, and there are more styles to choose from!

If he won't believe it...someone else take some Freelander CVs to the Rally to sell him when he needs them.

There is guy on here somewhere named Chris who had an 05 Freelander with a lift and it chewed up some CVs...he traded it for a new Disco.

Just take extra parts and be prepared. Then you hopefully won't need them and you will have an awesome trip!

Hey where in the world did I ever say Camaro wheels were okay on a DII?!

Show me.

I'm all for people using their trucks and upgrading, but I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to aftermarket/upgrading stuff. I like LAND ROVER parts on my LAND ROVER, as long as I can get them. :)

Search it, there are many references to it here. I'm not saying anything about your personal statements, it's just stupid that this board widely accepts Camaro wheels on a DII and shits on Ford wheels on a Freelander most likely just because it is a Freelander and all that own them are for some reason lower class.

If you weren't "saying anything about [my] personal statements" then you shouldn't have used the quote feature, k?

And when you give an example, you should back it up with a link.

That's how "this board" works. Edit: you've been around long enough to know that!!

Now, about Freelander owners being low class, or whatever, that is stupid. There are people who don't think they are real off road trucks b/c they don't have low range, but that is where the prejudice stops.

To me, and most, it's not about it being a Freelander. It's about FORD wheels on a Land Rover. I would question LAND ROVER wheels on a Ford Explorer as an upgrade too!

now now

if exploder wheels on a land rover isnt a upgrade I would think that Lnad rover wheels on a ford would have to be right?

LOL

who cares what your wheeling in if your having fun.

Steve Rupp is a great example, he has a sweet fully decked out disco but yet the grin he gets when wheeling his suzuki glows like a 13 yr old in the girls locker room.

Alot of the people here could learn alot about off roading by spending some time in a simple little rig that allows you to mess up. Having to watch for body damage and be careful not to damage your truck prevents you from learning some driving techniques that would transfer and protect their beloved rovers.
