My parents are taking the Queen Mary 2 from NY to Newport, Boston, Bar Harbor, St. John and Halifax this fall.

They have sailed the QE2 a few times in the past but this is a new adventure, and an early 40th anniversary gift!

Anyone traveled with Cunard recently? Any tips for their day-excursions in Bar Harbor, St. John and Halifax? They know Boston and Newport quite well.

I was looking at those a few weeks ago, man if you have any money cruising is hella cheap right now. The one thing I couldn't find on the cunard site is if food was included. I didn't see anything one way or the other on their site.

QM2 would be awesome but the risk of contracting the exploding squirts is too much of a downside for me.

Halifax is nothing too exciting. There is plenty to do and see there, but just poking around for the day in town won't turn up too much. I always stop in a Granite Brewery for some eats and beverages and hit up the Bay of Fundy and nearby Pictou.

St. John's, Newfoundland? That's a bit more interesting up there.

And there are plenty of folks from the Bar Harbor to chime in regarding that area. If they had more time a nice drive to the nice towns around Mt. Dessert Island would be my choice. I like Stewman's (down on the waterfront) for eats and the view.

If you are going to take a "traditional" cruise the QM2 would be a good choice. All the others are littered with white trash. A real fun "cruise" would be one of Quark Expeditions. http://www.quarkexpeditions.com/

That's an old people cruise. Are your parent old enough for that?

You want old people go on a Alaska cruise. I thought I was in a sea going convalescent hospital. Plenty of old geezers that can hardly walk, but you better get the fuck out of the way if there's food involved they'll run your ass over with a walker.

My sister and I are giving them on-board credit to use for a few day-trip excursions in Halifax and St. Johns (Newfoundland)...maybe that will help with what to do while they are there.

I'll have to look at the itinerary again, but I think they have about one day (8-10 hours?) in each location. Suggestions for Bar Harbor, etc. will be welcome!

Oh and they love the formal cruising. Tuxedos and ball gowns, dancing, etc. They are not that old but that's the "feeling" they prefer.

Marty, I'm pretty sure all the dining is included. I noticed that room-service is also complimentary. As with most cruises, I would assume that beverages are an additional cost.

Garrett likes to go on those all-male rainbow adventure clothing-optional cruises. Last time he "ran aground hard" and required stitches.

HUGE Cunard enthusiast here. Done two trans-Atlantic crossings, one on QE2 in April 2008 and one on QM2 this May. Have another crossing booked on Queen Victoria in January, thinking about one on QM2 in June 2010, and am doing the maiden crossing on the new Queen Elizabeth in January 2011.

First off, dining is all included, as is room service. The only extra food-related costs are drinks and the alternative restaurant, Todd English. The latter is $20 for lunch, $30 for dinner. I was taken as a guest for lunch, and I thought it was great. I wouldn't recommend replacing dinner with it, though -- the atmosphere is much better in the Britannia (or Grills, if they're going that way).

Drinks are somewhat reasonably priced. I'm a scotch-and-martini guy on ships, and they run me about $7-9 each, including tip. I would suggest they get the soft drinks package, since it also includes things like mineral water. If you get more than one a day, it pays for itself, and it also makes a non-alcoholic drink more appealing (and thus cheaper) if you just want something to drink in the bar.

Cunard is a bit more "old world," but it definitely has a cachet to it. It attracts groupies, who won't sail on any other line. Part of it is the people -- on both voyages I've been on, I've met people in the bars or at dinner who I'm now great friends with. I know people who have been sailing Cunard since the original Queen Mary in the 1950s. It grows on you.

If they've been on QE2, QM2 is very different, but in a good way. QE2 was irreplaceable, and we're still mourning her loss almost a year later. But QM2 is truly the last great liner, and she has a very special spirit.

I'm 19, approaching the prime target age for a Carnival or Royal Caribbean passenger. But honestly, the atmosphere onboard a Cunarder is much, much more appealing to me.

If there's ANYTHING I can help them with, let me know.

Wouldnt you be happier on that bud light boat drinking yellow beer and hitting on fat chicks? You could hang out with Dave Matthews and bring T Pain with you.

We love Bar Harbour. They would probably enjoy Jordan Pond and Acadia NP. Go up on Cadillac Mtn early morn. to see the sunrise. Little Cranberry Island at the lobster coop to eat. There is alot of cool stuff to do on MDI. We usually stay at the Asticou when we are there.

Thanks Greg. You are right, I don't think they have ever considered sailing another line. They loved their QE2 experiences (I was just a kid, but I've seen the pics) and have talked about getting out there again for a while now. I'll pm you with any questions.
