D1 Wheel Bearings...

I'm in need of replacing my stock front wheel bearings. The driver's side can't seem to stay greased for very long and makes the crunchy sound maybe 2 or 3 months after repacking.

While shopping for new ones, I've noticed that the ones being sold on RN and AB dont have the same physical characteristics as my stock bearings.

Mine have a tapered design with the rollers showing the whole way around the case. I dont have a picture where the bearings are the focal point but you can clearly see one of them in this image on the left...

The ones I keep seeing are these...

So here are the questions...

Can I use these in my hubs? Are these a superior design? Can I service these in the future? Am I going to need a press/puller to install/remove the sealed type?

As always, all input is greatly appreciated

what you are seeing in that second link is the cup in the cone
it is 2 pieces shot as 1 assembly
you are overthinking it, they will work ;)

The second AB pic has the same conical bearing, but the RACE is sitting on it. In the first pic, Turd's race is elsewhere...

Hmm...I think I may just have to tear into it today. As far as I can recall, I don't think my outter bearing has said race. Is the race suppose to pop out along with the bearing when the rotor/hub assembly is loosened? Come to think of it, I dont think my inner bearing has the race either!

They should have them but you probably just didn't realize it since they are pressed into the hub. When you replace a bearing you should press out the old race and then press the new one in. Once the hub is nice and dirty it's hard to see that the race is actually not part of the hub.

No they should not pop out since they are a pressed fit.

Just another small point here... they are a snug fit but a press isnt necessary to remover/replace them. A hammer and drift will get them out just fine. On the back side of the race you will have a small lip that you can hit with the punch/chisel/drift. Just work your way around that in a circle and it will come out.

Got it! Anyone in the Lawrenceville area with a press? I'll bring the booze
Depending on how ambitious you are you should be able to do the job using a vise, brass drift (or other softer metal), a hammer and some pieces of wood.

Gettting the old ones out is easier because you're less concerned about damaging them. Just put the hub in a vice or otherwise secure it. Then you can use the drift and the hammer to knock out the old race. Just hit on alternating edges till it pops out.

I've not done this on a disco so it might be slightly different but what I've done in the past is just place the new race on the hub lay the piece of wood over it and then hit it with a hammer and try and seat it. Keeping it squared to the hub is important here. Once it's in and flush with the top of the hub just use the drift to knock it all the way in till it's seated. Just becareful not to damage the race itself. It's hardned so it should be pretty hard to damage with soft metal but not imposible.

Or you can just find someone with a press.

Same thing I believe, It has drawings doesn't it? I say this without being mean but, did you look at the manual and read the section on bearings before posting?

In all honesty, no I didn't. But I didnt think I had to, since I have taken the hubs, rotors, and swivels apart several times now. I did not realize there was a Race pressed in there.

Go buy Timken 37's from Advanced, cause that is most likely what you will get from AB or RN.

Hopefully, you will invest in the new seals as well

Get a drift pin from Harbor Freight, if you got one near you. They sell a nice big one, that works perfect. Made of solid brass.

If you have never removed races before, you will need help. There is a technique. I can't even imagine how you could use a press to get races out.

Heres a nice trick to make a tool to press the new races in.

After you get the old race out, cut it crosswise. This cut allows the old race to compress a little. Now the old race can be used to drive the new race into the hub, and when you get below the edge of the hub, the old race won't get stuck, and you eliminate the risk of gouging the sloped side of the new race in case the punch slips.
