Actually, you could run that year round. But, I bet its a bunch of money. Rotella can do the same protection with less cost.
I'm trying to get a decent spec sheet on Rotellas Syn 5-40, but its hard to get the info.

Being a diesel rated oil, I am inclined to think it has a high sheer, but I cannot prove it right now.

Edit.... hey look, atuozone carries it for pretty reasonable.

If you cant see a sheer rating, look for a oil with a ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 or C3 rating. That has a sheer rating that fits. Included are Castrol Syntec 0W-30, Mobil 1 0W-40(see above)and Valvoline Synpower 5W-40.

Okay the dealer changed some seals. Here is what they did. I also got the transmission ventilation service.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll77/peterdesanc/SCAN0006.jpg

It is real dry under there now. The tcase is still a little wet where the cover is. but it doesn't drip. The real test ill be this sunday when I drive to Miami and back to see the dolphins game. I only ever noticed the previous puddles of oil after driving to miami for home games. Had three games in a row and the long miles of highway driving showed through the wornout seals.

They ended up using 5w30 valvoline synthetic. Seems to be a Real thin oil considering I live in south florida and it is high 70s even during winter. Oh well, I'll change it in 3k miles.

Did you school them on oil?
:)

Nah. I didn't want to piss of the master tech, since he is the guy who usually works on my rover. At least I think he is.

But I was on the phone with my service guy, he gave the phone to the tech. It was funny when the tech told me that my oil was too thin because I use a synthetic. Then I asked him how is a 15w40 oil thin? which he responded why are you using such a thick oil. Then I answered, well these engines are Flat-Tappet engines. He gave the the phone back to my service guy.

I run Rotella 15w40 in the cold Chicago winters and have not had any problems. Everything doesn't want to start when it's -30 below  Barrios35: you can pick up some Rotella at Menards. I just picked up a case of gallon jugs for 30.00.

I saved the ratings from a while back:

Rotella 5W-40 Synthetic
Viscosity index 176
Pour point -40
Flash point 475
HT/HS 2.9
Noack 13
TBN 10
CCS 6400 @-30

Rotella T 15W-40
Viscosity index 146
Pour point -15
Flash point 415
HT/HS 3.7
Noack 13
TBN 10.2
CCS 7000 @-20

Dunno. I havent seen the spec sheet.... Take a look. :) If it meets ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 or C3 and has a sheer of 3.5 then it will be ok. If not, then your engine is asking for more then that oil can provide.

I emailed them this.
" I would like to know what oil you recommend for a Flat Tappet Engine
that has a sheer of min 3.5 and rated A3/B3 A3/B3 or C3.
It is on 01 Land Rover with 133K miles."

"Our Valvoline MaxLife Full Synthetic SAE 5w30 product would be perfect for this application. It is an oil recommended for high mileage, with a 3.5 HTHS rating, and also meets the ACEA A3 specification, making it 100% compatible for your application. Our biggest supplier for the Valvoline products will be Napa Auto Parts. Other suppliers will include Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts, O?Reilly Auto Parts, Checker/Checker Auto Parts, Carquest, and KOI. If these stores do not stock the products, please ask to order."

From the Shell Rotella Fourm:

http://www.shellusserver.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=3323&page=5&fpart=2

"Someone over on BITOG e-mailed Shell about this. Here is the reply he got:

I show that typical values are 4.1 for Shell Rotella T Multigrade Oil SAE 15W-40 with Triple Protection Technology and 4.2 for Shell Rotella T Synthetic Oil SAE 5W-40.

Thank you for your interest in Shell Rotella Products!"

A HTHS rating of 4.1 and 4.2 sounds about right when compared to other CJ-4 or CI-4+ rated oils.

Below are HTHS ratings that were pulled of the corporate websites of the various oil companies.

Amsoil Premium Protection 20w50 (API SL) – 5.0
Amsoil Marine Synthetic 10w40 (API SL) – 4.6
Mobil 1 EP 15w50 (API SM) – 4.6
Pennzoil Marine SAE 40 (API SJ) – 4.5

Pennzoil Long Life Heavy Duty 15w40 (API SL) – 4.3
