Hello everyone,
I wont bore any of you with the grim details of my financial situation, so I will sum up by saying I just moved to Connecticut for work that stopped being here the instant the moving truck was unloaded, and to help me celebrate this momentous occasion, my 2000 Disco cooked it's starter.
I am in desperate need of a useable starter for my Disco, since both my wife and I need dependable transportation to locate work in our new home state.
If anyone out there can help, please let me know the price you are asking, as well as the shipping costs to zip code 06825.

Thank you each in advance for your time and consideration.
Glen

If you have it off - try a local rebuild shop? Most places have one if you ask around and find some "old-timers" they will point out a place.

I know i have a local place that's been around for 50-60 years or more....

Good luck! I wish I had one, I'd be happy to send it to you for the cost of shipping. Wait maybe i do...... did i sell it to someone here on DWeb? Did it sell along with the motor? Who did I sell that to on here. Seems to me I did sell it. Crap I forget. This diesel swap has taken a long time and my memory is fading.

I'll look tomorrow. But I am pretty sure it's gone. I know the alternator is sold for sure.

If you need it 'yesterday' and have to pick it up, try Paul Grant...he is actually in Connecticut, probably no more than 30 minutes from you.

If you can wait two or so days for shipping, I always go with Will Tillery though; his parts, service, prices and attitude are second to none!

Both of these guys are easy to find here in the forum.

Good luck to you man!

Like I said, "attitude second to none". I have no horse in this race, but Will...you DA-MAN, bro!:applause:

I'm late to this thread but if you can get up to New Milford today, I have one in a truck I am taking apart that you can have. Give me a call and we can sort it out.
Cheers,
Paul

WOW!
I must admit, I didnt look back here until now, because quite frankly, I didnt expect the response Ive recieved.
I thank each of you for your kindness and generosity.
I will be trying to contact Paul Grant, since my needs are fairly immediate, and he is local.
Now that I have Connecticut cable for my internet server, I cant even e-mail him since it wont recognize any of my MSN pass words. (it never ends, I swear)
Mercifuly he has posted his phone number, so I am praying he doesnt freak out when a complete stranger calls his home.
Wish me luck, and thank you all again.
Glen

p.s. Thank you all also for reminding me why Land Rover people are so admired. This has actualy been the best experience, even if I cant get up and running agian.

Just curious, what isn't the starter doing? I've seen them where the big wire is just loose enough to not transfer power when the solenoid is engaged. And I've got a used one on the shelf if need be.

What my starter is doing, or not doing to be precise, is anything at all.
It is suffering from heat-soak.
For a while I was getting away with gently tapping the starter solenoid while the wife turned it over, but I knew that wouldnt last for long...and it didnt.
All of my connections are fine, and my battery is strong.
My starter has found an inventive way to let me know that its had all it can stand with its current possition, and its looking to move on, and as its boss, I am willing to let it go.

By the way, why the heck is there a bolt at the bottom of the starter, and a bloody Allen bolt at the top?
Every day, my truck finds a new way to make me scratch my head.

Hello, and thanks to all of you.
Firstly I would like to say that I never expected such an outpouring of generosity and concern for my situation.
I am deeply moved, and quite honestly, at a loss for words.

Indeed, as a few of you mentioned, Paul Grant was so much more than decent to me, as was Kevin.
I almost didnt call Paul, simply because I felt so danged awkward calling a complete stranger to help me out of a tough spot.
The instant paul answered the phone, I realized that even if he were unable to assist me, my life was better for having spoken to him in the first place.
As many of you must already know, he is a kind and friendly soul, whos ability to empathize with my plight took me by surprise.
Within moments , he , and Kevin set up a time and place for us to meet, and for me to pick up the much needed starter.

I am flat out blown away by these mens capacity for warmth, and giving. (the world would do well to have more people like them roaming about.)

Despite my desperate need, I have , as of yet, not installed the starter. I need to buy a couple of more tools to do the job.
(it is amazing how a couple of bad divorces can deplete your tool collection!) (dont ask, OY)

Whether or not this starter solves all of my Disco-problems, or even if I just inherited a new paper-weight...I truly feel that my life took a fabulous possitive turn, just by being able to speak to these fine gentlemen.

I cant say enough nice things about either of them.

My deepest gratitude to both of you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I would also like to take a moment to tell all of the people who said that buying a Land Rover was a stupid move on my part, because it was classier than my financial standing, that the level of class associated with the name Land Rover has so much more to do with the people in the hobby than the name over the grill of my truck.

I may not be a "high society type", but I am smart enough to recognize that had I not bought this truck to begin with, I would have missed the opportunity to meet people like Paul and Kevin.

That would have made me poorer indeed.

People such as those who chose to help me on this web-site, make my truck a bargain, at any cost.
Thank you all.

Just a quick follow-up, for anyone out there who may be interested.
I sold a few Volkswagen toys, to make the money I needed for the tools that I was missing...and as any of you who have changed a starter know, once I had the tools, the job went very quickly.
After the switch, all I needed to do was jump start the poor beast and VVROOM!
I felt like running around my driveway, like Dr. Frankenstein, yelling "It's ALIVE!"
Despite the long wait to get the Disco back on it's feet, the timing couldnt have been any better.
Tommorow is the first day that my wife will actualy need to drive herself to one place, while I will have to be somewhere else entirely.

I am keeping my fingers crossed, for this well may be a chance for both she and I turn earn a living.
Good things are coming my way, and I feel as if I should be thanking everyone on this site, for thier patience and guidance.
Any possitive dealings in my immediate future, in no small part, will be due to people I have dealt with here, in discoweb.
Thank you all, once again.
Glen
