Leaving apart the 'people' comments, you have to look at what you get for the money, and how well you can look after what you buy.
D1's are getting on a bit now, unless you buy a very late one, and then you may as well go for a D2 and get the benefit of the extra space in the back and other details.
In the UK, D1's are rust-buckets and most are now either into new boot floors and inner wings or in the scrapyards.
D2's are much better protected in the bodies, but the chassis seem to need extra protection.
Mechanically they are pretty similar, D1 suspension radius arm mounts and rear axle A-frame are suspect, D2 bits are pretty massive by comparison. Diff's and gearboxes and transfer boxes are nearly identical. Centre diff is present on early D2's and missing on later ones, but the electrickery of traction control works well and most D2 drivers never need any more than that.
Personally I'd always go for the D2, it has far more electronics, but they are generally reliable. It has more room in the back and better seating, it has bonded windows (apart from the tailgate) instead of rubber seals and so on.
As far as being money-pits goes, I can't entirely agree with that, but they do need more maintenance and mechanical savvy than a standard car, no arguing with that.
Parts are cheap (for us in the UK at least) and information such as the RAVE manuals is freely available, plus there is a big specialist accessory market grown up around the brand, just a pity that the North American market is so far away from the UK.
