Well it's time for me to get a Disco again. This will primarily a trail rig but I will be daily driving it about 10 miles a day to work. So the budget is about $5000. I have found quite a few DII's at this price so far. What are the best years for the DII's and DI's? I prefer the "smaller" look of the DII but they are suprisingly hard to find. My biggest concern is have a center diff lock, other then the 04's are there any other year DII's that have it?

Save more money and build a buggy. Land rovers are money pits and the land rover community is full of ego driven well to dos, broke ass cheap fucks, and smart ass know it alls. No matter how or what you do to your truck, everyone will shit on you. This is the most arrogant group of people you will ever meet. For another $3k you can pick up an fj80 or lx450, build it for far less than a rover, and enjoy being within a community that believes no matter how or what you do to your truck, it's all about fun.

It's unfortunate I can't disagree with those comments.

I would have to agree. I'm a Jeep guy but have always wanted to build a Disco. The Jeep crowd is great except for the new JK guys. I had a JK and my biggest reasion for getting rid of it was the crowd. A bunch of a$$holes that thought because they owned a Rubicon and took it to 4wheelparts and told them to make it look like every other JK they think they know everything.

This alone shys me away from a Disco... Guess I'll stick to an XJ

Why can't people just be nice to one another. I have been raised to be kind and understanding and compassionate. It is really a shame that people the chose to frequent a Land Rover discussion forum (with well over 1400 posts to their name) and then they bash other rover owners. I must say that the rover owners that I chose to call "my crowd" are nothing like what you stated. These guys are nice, helpful, fun loving, and just wonderful to be around. I DO NOT chose to hang out with people that talk trash about their "so called" friends. I will leave you with a quote from my mother..."If you don't have anything nice to say than don't say anything at all." and my mother is an awesome lady!!!!

I don't know. I've met a ton of VERY cool Land Rover guys. Dweb is a "tough guy" forum where people give eachother shit, along with advice. Sometimes it definitely goes too far. You cannot base your opinion of the land rover community off a web forum. Go to the LRNR and you'll be amazed at how cool the community really is.

Oh, and D1.

Look at a series IIa or III Rover. Series owner are pretty chill and they are way easier to work on.

Leaving apart the 'people' comments, you have to look at what you get for the money, and how well you can look after what you buy.

D1's are getting on a bit now, unless you buy a very late one, and then you may as well go for a D2 and get the benefit of the extra space in the back and other details.

In the UK, D1's are rust-buckets and most are now either into new boot floors and inner wings or in the scrapyards.

D2's are much better protected in the bodies, but the chassis seem to need extra protection.

Mechanically they are pretty similar, D1 suspension radius arm mounts and rear axle A-frame are suspect, D2 bits are pretty massive by comparison. Diff's and gearboxes and transfer boxes are nearly identical. Centre diff is present on early D2's and missing on later ones, but the electrickery of traction control works well and most D2 drivers never need any more than that.

Personally I'd always go for the D2, it has far more electronics, but they are generally reliable. It has more room in the back and better seating, it has bonded windows (apart from the tailgate) instead of rubber seals and so on.

As far as being money-pits goes, I can't entirely agree with that, but they do need more maintenance and mechanical savvy than a standard car, no arguing with that.

Parts are cheap (for us in the UK at least) and information such as the RAVE manuals is freely available, plus there is a big specialist accessory market grown up around the brand, just a pity that the North American market is so far away from the UK.

If you do get another rover, and it will mainly be a trail truck I'd have to say a D1. There are a lot of lift kits for D1 and Defenders than a D2, and I'm not just talking about springs.... My D2 sits on 36's and it was not easy to get it there. Once you get a D2 over 3" you have to link the rear to get it to handle like a D1 or Defender, or any truck with an A arm or panhard rear. D1's have beefier hubs and brakes. They don't have Bosch motors. They have cdl's etc.

Fwiw, my D2 is on its third motor, and the other D2 (stock) is getting its second motor currently.
