Disco II Power Steering Pump

I did a search, but most threads are for Disco I pumps. Are there any alternate pumps that work for a Disco II? If not where are the best prices?

My Disco II's pump is noisy on cold mornings. I flushed the fluid, but it is still a little noisy. It actually all started after I cut about 2 inches off the end of the rubber hose. It leaked a little, so I cut a clean edge. A little fluid leaked out. I used the bleeder and bled out a fair bit of fluid, but it is still a little noisy. Granted the other morning my thermometer was reading -16.5 F in the morning.

I am not familiar with the shape/size of the GM. Will it fit? I am just not motivated enough to redesign the mounting brackets.

What did you use for fluid? There is a synthetic fluid BMW uses. Pentosin 11s. I think it's spec for vw/audi now as well.

The OE spec PS fluid is actually a Texaco 'cold weather' fluid, which is green, not red as most PS fluids are. It is available at LR and GM dealerships. Not cheap, but works better. At my 60k change the dumbass dealer put in the conventional spec fluid, which I discovered when I did the 90k (it was making quite a bit of noise). Changed it and put in the new stuff and the noises are gone.

My new employer uses it in just about everything, BMW, MB, Porsche/Audi/VW, Volvo, etc. Supposedly, it is compatible with the old stuff, just better.

Yesterday, I sold a guy a $30 bottle of Audi power steering fluid!

Made to the same spec as Pentosin 7.1, which is a natural mineral oil, not a synthetic. The 11s is full synthetic.

Jeff do you know if the D1 and D2 pumps are interchangable?

They look kinda similar, I never eally checked. I may have one around here somewhere, one of the guys warrantied one for no apparent reason. That happened a lot.

The Vavoline is clear. I will look for the Pentosin stuff. It only makes a noise while it is cold, stops once warmed up.

Where can it be purchased? I will have to check out the different stores.

Has anyone confirmed if the GM pump will fit into the DII? If not is there another alternative?

What are the common symptoms of a bad Steering pump?
I think I need to replace mine as it is VERY difficult to turn the wheels at low speed.
No apparent leaks and serpentine belt is is ok shape. How could I test the pump without removing it?

Does anyone know of a good independent mechanic here in the South Bay Area? (San Jose)

After trying with no luck to find the Texaco fluid in the local autopart stores, I bought some of the GM power steering fluid that is listed in the DII owners manual at my local GM dealer (its green in color though). The last 2 numbers in the GM part number just indicate the volume of the bottle.

the GM power steering pump working on the DII is going to be like the Dodge Durango front driveshaft thread; a lot of conjecture that leads to the conclusion that it won't work. I ended up going with the Driveshaftsuperstores.com bolt on replacement. I amd now in the process of replacing the power steering pump and the three hoses. Got the pump and hoses from Roverconnection.com - factory rebuilt pump from LR. Once it's all back together will use the Valvoline Synthetic with a half a bottle of the Lucas PS Conditioner. Expecting great results, will post a follow-up... Be Safe, Mark V.

my mechanic skills are limited to adding air to the tires, checking fluid levels and changing oil. I'll keep your offer in mind Will, but not too many mechanics here in the SF bayarea want to install customers' parts. They want to sell you the part and install it, or else...no warranty on the job. Of course, they parts they buy is 3 times as expensive as one can get them elsewhere.
again, I will keep your offer in mind, do you take paypal?
