FYI: I just went on line to check out http://roverconnection.com. A rebuilt Steering Pump for a Disco II runs $280 plus a refundable core charge of $110.

My Power Steering Pump crapped out about 4 months ago, I am just getting around to fixing it. Basically the pump makes a very loud whining sound. It was so loud it was turning heads and not in a good way.

The power steering pump will make the same whining noise if you are low on steering fluid.

AS OF MARCH 12 - These are on Back Order. Not sure when they will be available.

I guess I am alittle slow with ya'll post. My power steering pump was replace in 07. In Michigan it got cold lately and it whines but once warmed up its okay, no steering problems. I did not change hoses when I replaced the pump. I am thinking of changing hose instead of pump and adding a Cardone filter.
My question is do I need to change the pump along with the hoses and then adding the filter?
I too have changed to GM Cold Climate power steering fluid, but still whines when cold until warmed up.
Any suggestions would be greatlly appreciate it.

I just replaced a DII power steering pump. I odn't see how the DI substitute could work as the DI pumps are threaded for the mounting bolts and the DII uses through bolts.

They are admittedly very similar and I'm sure that if one were sufficiently motivated, you might figure out a good mounting method, but I don't think it's worth it.

If Will is selling them as inexpensively as he's advertising, there's no real reason to go anywhere else, remember, the dealers want more than $600 for this part.

I used a synthetic power steering fluid. I believe it is Valvoline. The SynPower.

worst crap ever. cheapest parts store ps fluid bought by the gallon work much better in my experience.

I used ATF for power steering fluid in all my other vehicles, including my Disco I. My Disco II did not like it. I tried other power steering fluid but have since switch to the correct stuff Land Rover recommends. My Disco II even when sitting out on cold -20* F days in MN works great. No more whining, not more stiffness that the steering used to have.

ATF bought at the Tractor Store in five-gallon pails has worked for me as long as I've owned a Rover.

To make a D1 pump work on the D2 could you bore through wholes...drill the threads out so it would accept through bolts?
