DiscoWeb Announcement

DiscoWeb is approaching it's 14th year and it's time to announce a few changes that are happening this week.

Some of y'all know that I've been running the servers that host DiscoWeb for the last year or so. I provide them to the site free-of-charge. Starting this week, I'm also taking over the other administration that goes into running this site, namely: domain registration, the donations, purchasing vBulletin updates, and the DiscoWeb Store. For the most part, everything is staying the same. There are a few changes, however:

First off, I'm shuttering the DWeb store for now. I don't think it really made any sales but I don't want someone to send money and then wonder why they never got their sticker or DVD, so I'm closing it. I just don't have the time to run it. If you really want some of the merchandise, you can always send me a PM and if we have it, I'll work something out with you.

Secondly, I'm going to temporarily close off donations. In the past, Axel received the donations and used them for the maintenance of the LLC, the domain registration, and the hosting costs. The money for the servers now comes out of my own pocket and I'm fine with that. Since Axel is closing up Discoweb LLC, I want to stop donations until I can get another LLC sorted. If you're an attorney and know how to set one up, please get in touch with me offline. Once we have another LLC, I'll post up the costs of everything and we can do a small donation drive.

As for the site, here's what I promise you:

- Nothing is going to change.

- DiscoWeb will NEVER be sold to a for-profit company like D90 Source was.

- DiscoWeb will never have advertisements of any kind. The one exception may be an annual fundraising thread (see above).

- I'll keep the site running fast. I'll make sure that we continue to use high-end servers, not shitty virtual hosting like some other Rover boards.

- DWeb still never forgets. I never delete a post unless it's spam or unless someone reports a post for obvious illegal activity.

- Axel, Ho, and other administrators and mods are keeping their access. Nothing is changing there.

I love this site. I refuse to let it go to shit like so many of the others have. We're one of the oldest in the community and there's a tremendous amount of knowledge in us members and the site archives. We don't edit posts or delete threads just because we disagree with them. We don't spam visitors with Walmart ads or other bullshit.

Here's to another 14 years.

Chris

No ads; plenty of bullshit. That's the Discoweb way. :D

You had me scared there, for a minute. I had no idea what I was going to see when I opened this thread.

Cheers,

Kennith

Well, with the Discovery name coming back, you never know; this place could grow back to its former level of activity. Like a phoenix...

Just curious why it needs to be a LLC any more? At the end of the day, it's a forum, not really a business. Just wondering.

I think Axel did it to protect himself. I don't make a cent off this thing and I don't want to expose myself to liability for it.

This would be my thought also. If you were just hosting a website you don't really need to have an LLC. But, they were collecting donations and had a store setup. So it is/was really more like a business than a website. Which anytime you have money exchanging hands you really want to have some sort of liability layer there.

Wish I had more to offer on the setting up an LLC front. But that's not really what I do. I think you can now do almost everything you need through sites like legalzoom.com. If you have questions on tax implications of what you're planning to do, I could probably offer some help there.

Good job, Chris.

I am out of the loop but I did know that one of the 1st dweb admins dropped out years ago and Ho more recently.
Is Axel officially gone with this announcement?

I really enjoy the Automotive/Related news forum he added. At first it sort of seemed spammy when I hit up new posts but I find neat stories there every week. Cool feed.

Anyway, keep up the good work.

I don't know if Axel is gone forever from DWeb (I hope not) but he is retiring from the administration side.

Chris, I setup a corporation in WA state using Legalzoom a few years ago. It was very easy, but you are basically paying them a few hundred dollars to submit paperwork to the state and for a few of their corporate forms. You could save that money by getting everything setup directly with the state a doing a little research on your own.

I would probably have to file tax returns every year for the corp, wouldn't I? If that's the case, forget about it. I'll just close the donation and store pages.

It depends on how you elect to treat it for tax. You have several option electing to be taxed as a corporation is probably the least beneficial.
