Doing ball joints.

270,000 miles? Could it be a broken engine mount? I'd think you'd be on your 3rd set by now. :)

I've done far more than three sets. Probably more like ten. The territory around here is very heavy on washboard and ruts. It just tears through engine mounts. I've also had to re-weld my spare tire carrier, driver's seat mounting, and exhaust manifolds multiple times each.

Anyway, the current engine and transmission mounts are brand new.

Back on the hunt, my current plan is to remove everything I can, and simplify the problem. I've removed the front battery and battery box (have a second battery in the back that can run the truck), glove compartment, front passenger chair, steering damper, torsion bar, and bumper. The sound is still there, but at least I can see around easier!

Steering box? There is a tsb where you weld something or another and the sound comes from all over.

Oh yeah! That sound is caused by the inner frame structure rubbing against the actual frame. Pretty much every Disco makes that sound. Its almost like a grown/vibration from the steering. The fix for it is drilling some holes in the frame near the steering box and doing some plug welds on the frame. Its a pretty simple repair if you have the bulletin. If I think of it I'll try to look it up tomorrow at work, but I think Land Rover has removed that bulletin.

Ya my 99 pops sometimes really loud lol. Laziness has kept me from doing it.

jymmiejamz, I'd be very interested in seeing that bulletin. I looked all around the frame structures near the steering box, but don't see anything cracked. Is it something visible like that?

im in admiration of you new ball joints.

My boots are shot, and have been considering refurbing a a junkyard axle housing.

The correct tool is the Snap-On BJP-1 with the BJPOPT-1 set of dies. There is a die with the scallops already cut out to accommodate the housing.

I'll be doing a P38 in the next few days and will take lots of pics of the correct tool being used to do the job. I just did a set of ball joints on an F-350 and a Ram 3500 and the tool makes a bitch of a job easy!

my boots were shot for 80k miles or more until i pulled the axles... It is not worth doing unless they are bad or popping.

You can "rent" the same ball joint kit from Advance. The worst part of the job is removing the knuckles, @$%&! :banghead:

Agreed. Lots of swearing, oiling, prying, and banging. When I did the other two on my truck last weekend, instead of the knuckle coming off the upper joint, it pulled the joint shaft out. My big gear puller made this job a lot easier.
