Engel Fridge/Freezer

I'm chomping at the bit to get one, but not sure which one I want....

For those of you who have them, what would you change? Bigger, smaller, etc...

I'm looking at the 45 pretty hard, but I like the idea of hiding it under the Discoverys cargo cover. So, the 45 would be too big....

What is the difference between the Engel and the ARB?

that's why i got the 35, so i can hide under the cargo cover while traveling...so far no regrets.
Steve Rupp has a 45, and it's the same foot print as mine but a bit taller, and seems to hold a few more of those redneck bud's he likes so much.. :D

and the color is the only difference between the engel and arb
my arb is light blue, but every logo on it says "engel"
engel obviously makes em' both...
you'll love it, but remember to never put the dial over 2...
frozen beer sucks

The 45 is just tall enough so that it wedges itself between the seat and the rear door using the handles. I bought the slide lock but it ends up being a little to tall. I added 4 lashing rings and use the handles to loop some ratcheting straps. Marc uses the 35 with the slidelock. He made a board to secure the slide lock to. This looks like a great setup but like he said, I can fit a couple of more Buds in mine.

How useful?

I use a 68quart cooler for week long camping trips. My concern with the Engel is that it is so much smaller. Anyone with "real world" long term usage on the usefulness? Will I still need to drag along a cooler?

Thanks

I guess it depends on how much stuff you need to keep cool. What I will do when I camp is leave out the majority of the beverages. I'll keep in as much as I need for the day then replenish the bud at night. That 45 is pretty big and it fits so nicely in the disco. It depends on the size of you family though too, but I think anything bigger is too big for the disco.

I have the 45l ARB. The fridge is identical, engle. Exact same manufacturer.

Longest term is 3 weeks with it. 2 weeks with 2 people and 1 week with 1 person. For this trip I had a bigass truck, so brought a cooler as well for liquids only. We stopped at the store only to restock on liquids, fruit, veggies, the normal parishables. I typically do not take a cooler as well, just place about 6-10 sodas or what have you in there at a time and restock it. I also smoke salmon, chicken and brisket prior to leaving and it will stay for the full 2-3 weeks.

There is not a better expedition accessory (once you get over ths price).

With a good battery it will stay going for about 3 days, but test it first and make sure not to turn it too low, it wil freeze stuff-- easy.

That lid falling off thing is the most bothersome bastard ever !!! I love the engel but I hate that fucking lid with a passion... I wont even attempt to recall the amount of times its come off when I donjt want it to....

Thats because the rookies have it all the way in the rear and cant reach back into it and get an icey beverage while on the run... :D

well kyle, maybe be to much reaching into the freezer is the reason you can't seem to control the top... how many 3.2 Buds can you drink before you get a buzz...
that's an awfull lot of lid lifting :D

No , my top control issues are because both of those pins facing the same way makes it slide right the fuck off if you are doing anything other then lifting it straight up.. I kept saying I was going to put a little ball of weld on there but I guess deep down , I liked it falling off so I could curse at it and wake Heather up just to have her curse at me , climb back there , and put it back on , because I never did fix the thing... In the time that I have been a web explorer it hasnt fallen off once... :)

I've got the Engel 45 and copied the cargo floor and slidelock install on EE, came out perfect. Rewired the rear cargo socket straight to the battery with an inline fuse so it can be always on without the key. Remember, it may be smaller than a 60 quart cooler but you don't waste room on ICE, and your sandwich doesn't get soggy.

i don't know, i think i agree w/ kyle on the bag...
Bags are for accessory junkies, right craig... :D

although, someone did put a good crease in mine, i bet the bag would have protected it a bit...Hmmm maybe i NEED a bag too...
